I've got an itch for a mini 14 223/556

With all the hoopla about AR 15's I'm wanting a mini 14.

Anybody here have one they like ?

I've also read about shot out barrels but the old ones sure catch my eye. Are they hard to rebarrel ?

The mini14 is a classic. Like my M1A, it's a "love it or hate it" type of rifle.

For Mini14 reminiscence check out the George Clooney movie "The American".

He builds a suppressed Mini14 while on on the run in Italy. It's a special firearm for sure.

Liam Neeson's A team character sure looks good with one

They sure are fun if you can afford to feed it factory ammo all the time, or have a big stash of brass you don't care about losing

As for brass if you reload, consider ammoseek.com.
Current prices are 6-7 cents. Now granted it isn't match quality but neither is the mini 14.
Heck, Tula ammo is 37 cents.
Sometimes steel cases are just what you need for a carefree day at the range.
Here's a perk. The steel means the rolling magnet picks it up saving clean up time

i had a couple in the distant past. Of coarse i wish i woulda kept one. I never could get much accuracy out of the ones i had, thats why i sold them. for a shooter id rather have an AR pattern gun. now that i could barrel one that would be a fun project though.

I like mine well enough. Butt The trigger & swapping mags is not great. Try to Feed/reload one quickly, just once. Ar or Ak mag system is far superior. mikeinct

Oh an M1A makes me drool !
I've always liked wood stocks.
Wasnt until i started shooting competition stocks became a barrel holder & shooting just for fun went to the wayside.

I had this in main so it would get talked about maybe give the form some decent substance but powers that be chose different.
Glad y'all look for new topics.

I have some friends with the Mini14 & Mini30.
They like them for what they are.

I went a different route & picked up an M1 Carbine.
But that was before "The Great Boating Accident". ;)

If your wanting to get one, better do it now!!

i remember at one point ruger announced they were going to make an enlarged mini 14 in 308 - kind of an M1A copy but they eventually decided not to. i think that was the 80s. to bad they dont do that now. mabie it could be a Marlin:)

The prison system in arkansas uses them for some reason. A former guard i know said it was hard to actually qualify with one every month after i asked him about the accuracy requirements they had. He figured a guy could climb a fence 100yds from a guard tower and most likely get away. The mini30 seems to be a bit more accurate. I know a guy using one hog hunting

Last one I dealt with would do 3 !/2 to 4" GROUPS AT 100 YRDS. On bench But my knowledge of them is that they work! But far from being a tackdriver. I don't think you can do a lot better accuracy wise than I did. Gary

I worked at Tucker prison and the mini-14's they had in the Armory and in the towers were the most rusted out, battered specimens of firearm shaped objects I'd ever seen in my life. Maybe I'm being too hard on their condition, but I was gunnery officer on a minesweeper back in the day, and by comparison to the prison rifles, the Navy rifles were in tip top shape even considering the salt air environment.

The Mini 14 makes a fantastic tomato stake lol. But in all seriousness, it will either shoot 2 moa, or it will pattern like a fine English shotgun..... They weren't meant for accuracy, and they aren't particularly reliable( bent op-rods, etc.) But they are an American classic.
