ive got a muzzleloader question

My dad has an old thompson center muzzleloader that is mint on the outside. But he cleaned the bore and then stored it for about 10 years. The bore is shot. He didn't grease the bore. I was wondering if someone was able to rebore the gun from .50 cal to a .54 cal.

First off,what model is it,Hawken,encore,or whatever. Thompson would probably rebarrel it to look stock like it never happened. Reboring isnt cheap and I would call them for a quote.

Green Mountain sells replacement, drop in barrels. Try looking for them at Track of the Wolf, or maybe Mountain State Muzzleloading. Cabela's might even carry them.

A new drop in barrel is the best and cheapest way to go. Green Mountain had a real good reputation when I was shooting them 30 yrs. ago and I would still give them a try.

A rebore is about 150-160 plus shipping both ways,
A GM Drop In replacement barrel is 200-220 + and a defenate upgrade from the factory 1-48 twist

Thompson does have a liftime warrenty for factory flaws/errors and have given alot of leeway for abused bores in the past, They've been bought out by Smith an Wesson (I think) just this last fall and things have changed. I'd call'm or e-mail and see what they say.

You can always try scrubbing the dicken out of it with a brush then patches and JB paste and it might suprise ya and come back to shooting fairly decent again. Remember these olde Traditional rifles aren't modern in-lines and have different ranges and tolerances,

Look on Ebay for barrels, there's usually several at any given time that can be had for around $100 or so, look under "Blackpowder"

GM LRH barrel with sabot-ed slugs from a peep sighted flint ignited Hawken almost make me look like I know what I'm doing!

The gun is a hawken style muzzleloader but its an oddball with a half octagon half round long barrrel and the greenmountain barrels are not offered half and half nor that long. I will try thompson center but it hasn't been made in a long time. The bore is flat out gone. I scrubbed it with a brush and a pile of rust approx 1/2" deep fell out. I seriously doubt that thompson still has these barrels laying around. Does anyone know a gunsmith that can do a rebore? Thanks for the help

Probably your best bet would be to contact;
Ed Rayl (PO box 91 Gassaway, West Virgina, USA 26624, 304-364-8269) or
Bob Hoyt (700 Fairfield Station Road, Fairfield, Pennsylvania, USA 17320, 717-642-6696).

Both those guys do ALOT of ML custom and re-bore,,
