I have a feeling I still have that hat packed away somewhere, but I don’t know where. My kids will probably find it when they rooting through my stuff when I am gone.

It's that time of year again. Let's see those big and small game kills of the '18-19 season.

First one of the year for me, not a trophy, a doe with the muzzleloader. Will yield some nice roasts, chip steak and lebanon bologna.

This boy was hunting early am along the river, and so was I. He didn't make it. River bottoms attract many game animals and predators. My chicken coop is at 12 o'clock, look close blends in well, the window in it has accounted for many predators, check out the spine shot dead center of his back.

Used a hook on these today. Down at my Sand Pit a half mile away from where I live today. I grew up and worked there since I was 11 years old. My parents had a cabin that was there when Dad bought the sand operation in 1958. We used to catch buckets full of crappies out from under the sand dredge in those days. My Kids grew up there also. Camping, water skiing, fishing all summer. 50+ degrees here in Iowa today, light wind. Used crawlers, minnows, and Coors Banquet for bait. Nothing caught on the crawlers, all the fish on minnows, and caught a buzz on the Coors. Eagles soaring around and noticed a very Black mink on the far bank. Caught the biggest striped bass ever, a couple of nice channel cat, and a dink walleye. The first walleye in 3 years. Used to go down and catch a couple at will. Not lately. The cat will be tasty out of the cool fall water.The lake is full of walleye, but I think the shad is so plentiful they're not hungry. A great day recalling where I grew up, worked my whole life, and enjoyed the kids growing up there also.

The rope is getting shorter....

Another bait pile casualty today. I've had this yote on trail cam monitoring his travels, he comes every 3 days, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. Today was the third day I'm home, and watching 10:15 exactly, bright and sunny, he sneaks in to chew on what's left of 2 roadkill.I executed my patented neck shot at 125 yards, eviscerated his jugular, severed his spine, and put this gaping hole in it, DRT,20 grain Hornady superformance, check out the blood splatter on the log where he fell. It's going to be a fun winter.90% of the yotes will establish a pattern that makes them vulnerable, especially when baiting; they will return until not one scrap or bone exists. When you know this you can cash in.

Last day of rifle season in ND. Went and walked an old cow pasture along the river next to the farm I grew up on for my son to fill his doe tag. Nothing but some pheasants. 1lessdog texted and asked if we had filled his tag yet, Nope. He asked if we wanted to go to a spot he had permission for. Yep. Met at the house and hopped in with him. The drive down there was 5 times as long as getting set up on the hunt. Found what looked like 2 deer from the gravel and we snuck in on a field road. 1 nice buck and 1 doe which turned into 3 does. The buck walked back into the bush and the does kept feeding in and out of the trees. Initially ranged at over 300 but they kept getting closer. At 265 he sent a 80 grain ELD-X out of 1lessdog's .22 Creedmoor. He was admittedly holding shoulder but must've pulled it and just dropped it with a Headshot. No Tracking Needed.

Really Blessed to have a great Friend in 1lessdog. Can't thank him enough.

Left Austin, TX on the 16th, arrived in SW CO Monday afternoon. Tuesday we did some scouting. That night we received intel from a friend of a friend about a couple of legal bulls in the bottom of the canyon with possible 800 yard shot.

Feeling lucky, Wednesday we took off very early to get to the potential site waypoint before sunrise. My friend spotted possibly the same bulls bedded down. From the ridge overlooking the canyon, the only possible shot would be standing, rifle over a tripod.



My friend and I both ranged the bigger one. Agreed on about 637 yards. The bull was facing left. After the shot, it stood up wobbly, then dropped facing the other direction.

Expand the picture, you will see a darker spot by the front leg. The 215 Berger coming out at 3K did a great job at 637 yards away.



Not any record, but very nice enough enough for me to check off a bucket list.




The elk packed out (not by me) deboned, cut up and wrapped, it was time to head to TX and go after this guy. My friend who helped me drive has this ranch in Briscoe County, TX. The buck had been hanging out at the 630 yard feeder at night, but never showed up during the day. We figured bedding area is nearby.




Opening morning mule deer season, 23 Nov, all morning I glassed the mountain, no sign of any buck. After lunch I started glassing again from behind the ranch house. At 1330 I thought I saw movement at a draw 645 yards away, then nothing. Put the rifle in that area, dialed up the elevation on the tenmile scope suggested by Leica Pro bino. The 300WM on a bipod fully settled, I saw movement behind the green brush where the sun rays end on the picture. Took this picture when we drove the sXs to the ridgeline.



After a couple of minutes, the 2x2 buck stepped out in the clearing facing left, just enough time to send the 215 Hybrid (same rifle and ammo used to take down the bull.) Picture shows the exit.



Great week to remember. Both taken on opening days.

NY State Opening Day. My 13 year old takes Down a 7 pointer 1 hour into the hunt. 243 Win hand loads. 65 yards.

Opening morning a half hour into the hunt. My wife is frugal, one shot- one deer. She hates to waste ammunition . She loves her little Ruger in .223 topped with a 3-9x50 Leupy. 65 grain Sierra game kings have been perfect on her whitetail bucks.

Was deer hunting my pasture this morning and saw this young female cross my lane left to right. Eased the safety off, but couldn’t see her in the grass. A couple minutes passed and she popped out on the right further down. She came toward, saw me, cut right back in the grass. I snap shot as she turned. About 70ish yards, no match for a .308…

338 Win Mad at 272 yards walking. Literally got a snap shot as he finished cutting across a food plot. Earlier with a 7mm I took a 7 pt there in Georgia.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Beautiful frosty morning at the family farm. Love watching the sun pop up over the Appalachian mountains. Thanksgiving day made 30 years ago since I took my first deer. I remember sitting about 2/3 of the way up on that mountain in the pic, thinking I was the luckiest 13 year old in the world lol. Pulled the ole 30-30 out to celebrate the day.

45-70 1895 Marlin that we custom modified in my rifle shop many years ago. A close friend was doing R&D for Marlin and Load development for Nosler at the time. He had a 450 Marlin built in this same style first. Marlin went crazy for it! He talked me into doing a stainless 45-70. He sent pics to them and the next year.....Anyhow first deer in 6 years. Been letting the kids do all the shooting. 50ft 325 Flex tip with plastic insert pulled. No lungs or heart left just bits and pieces. Not a wall hanger but after a 6 year hiatus I'll take it!

As I grow older I am finding revisiting the past...going to farms I once hunted, spending time with old memories, carrying guns owned by great granddad, grandad, dad, friends now gone...all of this means nearly as much as the deer or groundhog...but the icing is taking game again with such rifles or shotguns. Making what may be a last memory with these tools brings things in a circle and honors those freinds and dear memories. Well Done Taylor
