It's that time of year. Let's see those kills.

This one spent part of his time in Canada and part of it in Montana. It's big country that doesn't have much cover so shots are often very long. This guy stopped at 450 yards when he could first see the calling position. He wasn't coming any closer either.

First one of the year for me, not a trophy, a doe with the muzzleloader. Will yield some nice roasts, chip steak and lebanon bologna. :)
First coyote this year in snow over bait.17 hornet neck shot i've perfected,DRT,125 yards.

Me in Pennsylvania in 1977 with a Marlin 336 in 30–30 and me in New York 2025 with a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. Not the biggest buck on these pages but it sure was fun to take a step back in time and hunt with the same type of rifle I did when I started, just a different cartridge.IMG_4902.jpegIMG_5190.jpeg

I haven't been around much this year. And until recently, haven't been out in the woods much, but here are a few. The leaves have fallen, and it's really dry. Every step is a crunch. It's going to be a shotgun only season for me. (I will soon go in for foot surgery, and that will be the end of the season for me) I can't reach out as far with a shotgun as I can with my 22 or 17hmr. So sometimes I see a squirrel out of range, and they hear me comin' because it's so hard to step quietly. Heck, it's hard to sneak up on a squirrel with no sound, much less leaf crunching steps. For these gigantic fox squirrels, I'm using #4 shot with full choke.

I went out again today. It rained all day yesterday, so the leaves are wet. That was a big help so that every step isn't a loud CRUNCH! I park literally 50 feet from where the woods start. I get 50 feet into the woods and I see a fox squirrel to my left. There's some tall/big trees, and a rise/bump in the landscape...like a small indian mound. Relatively dense brush on this mound, but I make my way over, nearer to the squirrel. Now I'm on top of the mound, relatively well hidden. But I think the squirrel saw me and eventually escaped. I wait and wait...only to finally hear some noise at my 4 o'clock. I slowly turn around and I see a red squirrel zipping around me. It finally stops about 30 feet away and starts chattering...letting everything know I'm there. I don't bother with reds, but I don't like how they give my position away. Eventually, it stops and goes away. A few minutes later, I hear another noise behind me, and I figure it's the red. I slowly turn around, and it's a fox squirrel! On the ground and perhaps only 25 yards away. I slowly put in my earplugs and bring the gun to the ready. It starts climbing a tree, and I figure I'll wait for the good shot. The sun is behind the tree and all I really see is black and white silhouette. I lose track of the squirrel, but I know it's in that tree. I see a bump on the trunk and wonder if it's the squirrel or just part of the tree. I slowly get my mini binocs out, and yup, it's the squirrel. As I put the binocs in my pocket, the squirrel starts climbing the tree, and raise the gun, ready for the right time. But then I see another fox squirrel, higher up in the tree. (all the leaves have dropped) They get close to each other, and then start their two seconds of excited chasing/playing. Once they stop, I fire on the first, the second moves about three feet, not knowing what to do. I fire on the second one two seconds later. Got 'em both.

Then I got a third about 30 minutes later.

It was a good day.

Made a trip to FLA to visit some relatives. Request was made to take out some iguanas taking their daily suntanning on the roof. Took out three with the pellet gun. Left the first one lay and the coyotes took the head and tail. Riding around the area, it's filthy with them.
