It's that time of year. Let's see those kills.

It's been a while since I posted some of my 'big game' kills.

I don't remember the story of this one. But I have a 22 cartridge on it's neck for scale. Around my neighborhood there are only grey squirrels...but out in the woods, there are fox squirrels, and I'm always amazed how big they are.

Same goes for this one.

Yesterday I went out to a small patch of woods...about 150 X 250 yards. Some seasons it's great, some seasons it's 'not'. I've always had to be careful as there is a house RIGHT on the southeast corner of these woods. But a few weeks ago, I drove by to see if the soy beans in front the woods were harvested. And to my surprise...the house has been torn down! Got two in the first 20 minutes. Then I heard one chattering, and it wouldn't shut up. But it was about 80+ yards away. So I figured I'll try to sneak up on it, but it will most likely see me. And that's what happened. I did at one point see it peaking out from behind a tree trunk. But it was nose and eye...not even the full head. So I passed on taking a shot. In the words of the Terminator..."Ah-ll be baak". The leafs on the ground this time of year are fantastic.

Friday afternoon, first hour in stand. So young, but still looking for my first Buck by Archery. Watched him for 10 minutes as he fed, and let him walk. Sunset closing in.

Wonderful day to be in a stand, and quietly collecting gear when another Buck walks into my 30 yd limit, but not interested in feeding.
Draw, put 20 yd pin on shoulder, but he only paused for a step. Released clean, but arrow was further back than optimal. Not sure if adrenalin, his movement, or a combination of the two, but he bolted and made it to the wood line to my right. Sunlight fading fast, and got out of stand to check ground for sign; no blood, but huge chunk of cut hair.
Woods are on the shadow side of the ridge, but found him about 60 yds from tree line.
Profound relief and yet more excitement, and now the shakes begin:).
Called Landowner for assistance, and I think he was as delighted as I was.

Such a Great Day!

Took my 9 year old nephew out for his first hunt as a hunter instead of a watcher. We got to sit in the blind all of about 30 minutes of hunting light when this guy walked up. Double lung with a 135gr Sierra out of my blackout and he dropped within 60yds.

I made sure to let him know they aren’t all this easy. I’ll need a bigger blind next year if my son wants to go. :D

I told my buddy in early September that I had a couple of hammers hanging around, and that I’d be delighted to take either of them. Bow season was super good to me. Yes, I spend way more time and money on deer than any sane person would, but I’m just not going to hunt with a guide or in a cage. Thanks for letting me share. There are some really nice deer in this thread.

Whole FamDamliy went out today to try and scare up a couple of does for the Boss-Lady and the boy. Red (Riley our 10 year old daughter) and I pushed an old farmstead of my cousin's. Got 2 to jump out and she got 3 shots off and connected on one. She needed redemption this year after clipping a doe last year and not being able to find it. Made her sick. Hence the .300 blackout AR pistol. No manipulating a bolt and taking her eyes hands and body off the gun. She said she liked that better.

Home Rolled 300 Blackout 125 gr Speer TNT over H110.

That'll be one to remember. I was hoping to have this pistol like 110 Barnes but didn't get as tight of a group. My son shoots those in a ruger ranch 300 blk. I bought the 500 pack of TNT'S for plinking and read quite a few people have successfully harvested deer with them at acceptable ranges.20241116_185514.jpg
Entrance on the starboard side

Exit on the forward port side. Lungs and top of the heart pass through. Can't complain with that. Quarter size exit.
