It's that time of year. Let's see those kills.

Meet Fred..
Fred is dead, but memorialized.
Fred's been hanging out in the living room and occasionally the dining room, he wasn't much of a conversationalist at dinner, so we sent him to his room which will be his final resting place.
Covid 19 got him, with underlying condition of 165gr partition.20210328_192011.jpg

I was going through some old spring turkey pics and came across one hunt that I wanted to share, and seems like the perfect time since season has opened for most of the country now.
This bird was taken during the Iowa 1st season, April 17 2018. Had blizzard like conditions pass through the day before season opened, dropping about 6” of snow, and behind the front, high pressure/blue bird skies that pushed temps down into the mid teens for lows.
It didn’t really shut down the gobbling at all and honestly made it that much more memorable to see a big gobbler strutting, in full color, in the snow!
I worked this bird for 2 hours, after flying down but couldn’t get him to budge. I finally heard a hen yelping with him so started calling to her instead. I eventually frustrated her enough to come in, pulling the gobbler in as well and found my opportunity at that point.
The gobbler weighed 30.0lbs exactly... This made 22 seasons that I’ve been turkey hunting, with the heaviest bird that I’ve taken, weighing 23lbs 12oz. Looking at the spurs on this bird, I believe he was only 3 years old so hard to say how much heavier he would have been at 4 or 5!
Hope everyone has memorable hunts this spring. Good luck!

Do squirrels count while cooking a deer skull? This was Saturday morning. Well here goes.

Ha, there’s a story behind this deer. Neighbor about 1 mile away shot (wounded) this deer 3-4 weeks earlier. Yep, 30 yards with, yes you guessed it the wonderful 308. I won’t start small war about using a particular caliber. But the “no shooting” nimrod wounded this animal and I ended up took him at 110 yards. DRT with a .243 ( you know the flat shooting caliber). Smile people!!

Hand to hand, killed him with my heel after I water boarded him... this is my hunting practice during the off season. It’s arguably harder to hunt down these things...

I found a mushroom today, I think this is as big as they get...

recipe: slices dipped in egg/milk then rolled in either flour or pancake mix, fried in butter. Messy business but worth the effort, has a buttery breaded egg taste is as best I can describe it. It’s a spring delicacy around here...very rich so very filling
