ITAR Registration -- Plan on Paying your Gunsmith more...

For what its worth, I just got an email from NSSF and they are fighting it. They are the first ones I have heard of that is actually putting up a fight. I talked to the NRA and the guy I talked to acted like he did not care.
He could of been clueless also Larry
 
I spoke to my rep's office late last week. I'd call my senators, but I live in NY state and I hate to waste my time. I suspect that if by some miracle I actually got to speak with someone in Chuck Schumer's office, I'd get myself in big trouble. I don't have one of those 'filter' things.

My congressional rep is a lame duck Republican, Richard Hannah. Yes, the very one that publicly stated he would vote for that miserable b*tch on wheels this November. I did not speak to him, but I did speak with one of his senior aides. He was personally very sympathetic, himself having worked for a firearms business for several years. The official position from Hannah's office leaves something to be desired, though. He informed me that their short-term solution is to 'work very hard to reduce the registration fee for gunsmiths to something like $200', to which I responded that getting screwed is binary - you're either screwed or you're not and manufacturing degrees of such improprieties is a tool found in every tyrant's tool box. I made it clear that I'll be calling back at least a couple of times a week and that I would appreciate the opportunity to speak to Hannah directly. So far, no phone call or email but I will keep trying.

They must be too busy ruling their subjects.

He told me his gross in a year would not pay for that license and fees. Sadly, he is now stopping all work.

Please do not take offense but if he only grosses $2250.00 a year or less, he obviously isn't taking in that much work. No wonder he closed. That's sad.

There are some good 'smiths in Florida, maybe not as local as your original guy but available none the less.

So in reading everything I am going to ask the question How does this effect me? I don't need a license now and why would I.

I don't do work for other people I strictly do barrels for myself. I guess keep the door closed when I am doing a barrel.

I guess this will lead the the next component shortage barrels.

So what happened to Congress and the Senate are in charge of enacting laws? I would think the POTUS is waaay out of line here.

John is a true gentleman; I think you are taking his comments out of context. He was simply asking how the ruling impacts someone with a lathe who is not a for-profit gunsmith. The answer is it does not impact you at all....except for the friends who lost their smith and will now ask you to do work for them...for free of course because they wouldn't want you to run afoul of those "for-profit" rules. :-)

I have a gun smith school certificate and can do my own work .
I will say we have lost not only a good gun smith but also a ambassador to the shooting sport .
Many of times he did work for others and didn't shoot him self .
Several times I have seen him take gun work on Friday night an the shooter could pick it up Saturday after shooting .
No Florida didn't loose only a gun smith . We lost far more . Larry

My first statement:

And I meant that, I did not want anyone to be offended simply because I was responding to what was written, not to all the information which was hidden behind the scenes through personal contact and private knowledge but never mentioned. I had NO WAY of knowing any of this prior to making my statement.

I'm sorry that you're losing a wonderful gunsmith (removed to alleviate contentiousness...).

Haven't lost a friend. But for now we have lost a gun smith . Talking with friend many more will also. Not just in Florida . Larry
