It looked like a 7-08 to me.....

Its basically a 7SLR, as you can see in the picture next to the 308 you get the same thing when you go from 243 to 6SLR, essentially a longer neck and better shoulder. The claimed speed or gain of speed over a 7-08 is a bit wild and that's probably why you see that nice ejector swipe
I'd agree with you there. You're not getting more speed by cutting back volume of case. You might do better if you have a longer barrel and pack in more slow powder.

Jason, who helps run this site had an article a few years ago where he used a 7x47 (necked up 6.5mm) and cut one inch off the barrel for velocity testing [edit: each test. He cut several inches off]. His initial velocity was over 2700 IIRC. Using 168's or 162's? Can't recall which bullet he used.

Edit: Added: I shoot a 7mm-08 for my long range rifle. It's a 1-8" twist, 28" barrel. Initially, my cases were .308 Lapua necked down and turned .003" off. This made the necks about the same as regular 7mm-08 cases, but .020" shorter. They stretched with sizing to 2.025" and haven't really grown over ten firings. I now use straight up Lapua 7mm-08 cases. Most of the bullets I shoot today are Berger 180 VLD's There was a giant fire sale on them when Berger released the Hybrids. Since they worked well out to one mile, I got all that I could for the low, low price of $.30 ea. Less sometimes.

What about the over looked 7mm IHSMA International ? Shorter case based on the 300 Savage. 38° shoulder. About the same as the Creedmoor cartridge. Which surprised me that I haven’t heard of anyone doing a Creedmoor in 27 or 28 caliber.
That right there is what the Venezuelans adopted as their national cartridge in 1952. The Salvo FAT-1E1 is basically the .300 Savage. It was necked down to 7mm (they believed Paul Mauser, in that the 7mm was the best choice).

Or maybe he (me too) knows the 7MM-08 is "that good"!
;)
I should probably explain how I ended up with 3 of them, haha. One was a limited edition something or other. Estate sale, too pretty to leave. One was for a mountain black bear hunt (and it worked very well for that.) I inherited the third.

I really thought they were alright until I got into the 6/6.5 stuff, and boy is that where it’s at for me!

I’ve been told though, that they’re excellent in the silhouette game.

Plusses and minuses. Great BC's, Better wind drift. Not even close to the 6mm or 6.5 for flatness of trajectory. I found that while the recoil isn't punishing it does move you around a bit. Well, more than my 6mm Dasher. Which was why I went to the 6 dasher in F-Open. Just that tiny little bit of not having to reset as much.

Anyhow, to me the advantage isn't the ballistics of the case, more that it fits standard .308 mags and action rails. The .300 was good in that it had the same taper as the 30-06, which is a bit more than the .308. The Creedmoor with it's .462" shoulder does not fit multiple rounds in a .308 mag without going sideways. after just a few. I'm a little tired of single feeding mine. And, just for giggles, my .22-250 ( and .250) won't fit more than five in a .308 mag. So, a cartridge loaded that fits and feeds out of standard short actions is just the ticket for me.

Basically 7-08 performance with a sharper shoulder ( slightly) and a longer neck. If throated right to take advantage of neck, capacities of loaded rounds would be “sixes”.

To improve performance and enhance either cartridge with high bc bullets and longer throats you need to run them in a long action vs short. JMHO
