Little backstory. East central Indiana. Born and raised here. Been hunting coyotes since they started showing up in the late 80's/early 90's. Retired now so I have a bit more bandwidth to do a few activities. I coyote hunt 300 days a year. Also deer and turkey hunt. Turkey season is in. I told the landowner that any time I am out, regardless of target species, if a coyote is present, it turns into a coyote hunt.
That's what happened this morning. Set up about 45 minutes before sunrise. Sun is just breaking the horizon and I see this coyote out in the planted field about 200 yards off. Here we go. I lip squeak and he starts to the fence row I am positioned in. He sees the decoy and locks on. Comes in steady on a string. I let him get about 15 yards from the decoy (25 from me) and unload a 3-1/2 in 5 shot Longbeard shell in him. He whirls, trots off obviously hurt badly. Stops at 65 yards. I let him have another. He drops right there.
It is now just after 7:00 so I figure I will hang out for the morning and see if any of the turkeys show up. I hen call a bit off and on. Two toms come out of the bottom cover into the planted field heading for the decoy. One left, one did not.
It is a great day. God likes me today. He does every day, but today was special. Reminds me of the Rev. Maclean's quote from "A River Runs Through It" when he had the best trout of the day, "I'd say Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me."
Have your own great day and tomorrow be better...
