Issues with my 6.5-284

When I ran a 6.5-284 I tried H1000 with the 140 Hybrids too. I know there's guys on here that swear by that powder, but I have never had any luck with it in 4 or 5 different rifles. I tried 4350 with the 140 Hybrids in mine and it was OK and nothing better than just OK. When I switched to the 139 Scenar and N160 is when mine came alive. It really liked that combo. I shot it in F-class my first year out and I got a little over 1100 really good rounds out of it.

Could you explain the "you can't force feed bullets" comment a little. Do you mean that you can't "force" them, or jam them into the lands, or do you mean you can't make a gun shoot something it don't like?

Thanks,
Tod

In order of importance
1. the gun has to like the bullet, if it doesn't, you're wasteing you time
2. seating depth has to be right
3. powder charge with an appropriate powder.

Been trying to work up loads for my 6.5-284. This is on my BAT "M" 1K BR platform. 30 inch 1 - 8 twist Krieger. I have been running Berger 140 Hybrids and tried both H4831 and H1000. 3 shot groups are uniform but in that 1/2 to 3/4 MOA at 100 yards range...... POOR!!!

Just wondering if there was another powder to try or should I change bullets? Amax....Seirra? Using Lapua Brass and Fed 210M primers. I was thinking I should either change brands of bullets or maybe try the 130. I can't imagin that a primer change would reduce groups by 200%.

This cartridge is new to me, but I know it was/is very popular with the 1K BR crowd and should group 3 shot groups in the 1/4 MOA range at 100 in zero wind/ zero mirage conditions.

Thanks,
Tod

Randy I seem to remember 55-57 grs. 4831SC and a 140 when the 6.5-284 was popular.
Dave they shot a lot of H4350. The Hoovers and most at Williamsport shot it. Been awhile, but thinking around during 52 grains with Sierra or Berger. USUALLY AROUND 2950. Matt

I don't have a gunsmith built rifle, but 4831SC works great in my Cooper M22 in 6.5x284. 139 Scenars, and 142 SMK both shoot around .4 with Lapua brass right out of the box. As a novice Fclasser, It was good to go for me. Stick with that powder and change something else.

Wow......either I didn't get anywhere near max or your memory is bad!! LOL I took mine from 48 to 53 gr of H4831sc. (.3 gr increments) It didn't show any PSI, but was I led to understand that this was near top loads. And....silly me...I haven't chronoed any of my loads yet, so I really have no idea where I am PSI wise. Usually I simply keep going up in charge weight with a powder until I see signs of PSI. My bad!!
In my defense, I saw ZERO signs of a "node" while testing, so I quit and moved to a different powder.

I take my reloading press to the range with me. I take one case , starting with the bullet of choice touching the lands. I then go up on the powder charge until I see ejector pin marks. I have then found the yield point of the brass. I back off that charge weight and adjust seating depth. When I get off the lands I may go up on the powder charge as pressure drops as you get further from the lands. It's all cause and effect and very predictable. The target tells you what works.

I just went through this, my rifle liked
H4350 48gr. Jump .030"
H4831SC 52gr. Jam .005" or jam .015"
Every time you switch something, it's like starting over.

Okay, so, how was LarryDScott running them in a 6-5 284?

You caught me: I'm like a politician, I misspoke.
It should have read Federal Gold Medal Match LR.
My rifle shot in the mid 3s w/just a slight touch of the lands
w/142 Sierras.
My next group was .010 off of touch. It was slightly better.
The final group was .005 off of touch. That was the sweet spot.
It shot back to back groups of .203. That where I quit. LDS

Not a big heavy bench gun but I recently purchased a Cooper Model 52 6.5x284 for deer hunting and some long range target shooting. I went with Lapua brass, CCI Br2, Berger 140gr VLD Hunting, and 55gr of Reloader 26. Velocity was right around 3075 through my chronograph. I used the method Berger suggest for finding the optimum seating depth and started with .015, .045, and .075 off the lands. These were the first three 3 shot groups out of the rifle. Not sure what happened on the flyer in the middle group but needless to say I was happy with the results. It also looks like this gun has a pretty big seating depth window for accuracy too.

OP,

I too had trouble finding any success with the powders you listed in my 6.5-284.

Reloder 23 is what I have found to give the best results in mine. It also easily gave me 100-150 fps more velocity than H4831 or H1000. It seemed that my barrel just didn't want to shoot until I got to a node that was faster than what I could get to with the H4831 and H1000.

If you can't get 47 - 48.xgr of H4350 under a 142SMKs jumped .015" with a 210M to shoot half moa or better consistantly than I would bet something is wrong with the barrel, chamber, crown or operator headspace and timing. This load has shoot sub half MOA in the last 8-10 6.5x284s I've built. I dont even remember how many barrels, I don't even test anymore. It just plain works with 8 and 8.5 twists with standard and 5R rifling, cut or buttoned, Norma and Lapua match chambers.
