Is Texas HS football big!

He's just jealous he's not a Texan. Goes back to the old saying, " never ask a man where he's from, if he's a Texan, he'll tell you soon enough, if he's not, dont embarrass him".
My daughter started kindergarten at 5, graduated high school with 32 college credits, BS Texas Tech, MBA Texas A&M. I'd say Texas schools are OK.

I agree. Congratulations.

My son graduated from Duke, my daughter from Johns Hopkins and George Washington University.

My son played basketball in high school. On their team, their forward became a lawyer, UT, their center a MD, UT, a guard an Architect, UT. Another forward a teacher, UT. My son, a guard, Biomedical/EE, Duke.

My daughter-in-law, University of Chicago, Dr. Vet Medicine, North Carolina State. She was son's high school sweetheart.

Yup, nothing wrong with TX public school system.

That sums it up about TX pride. I spent a good part of my career with the company overseas. Whenever we meet other Americans, they let others know they are Americans, the Texans on the other hand, proudly announce they are from Texas. The only other people I know who identify themselves other than the country they are from are the Scotts. I never heard the people I met saying they are from the UK, they are from Scotland. That is the Scottish pride.

I grew up in a small West Texas town with a history of top-class football teams at the time.

I also remember that the fathers, of up & coming young athletes, were suddenly transferred to better jobs in our school district or found high paying jobs in the oil fields.

It was pretty common in those days and I wouldn't be surprised if it still is.

I’ve traveled a lot and this has been my experience also, vis a vis Texans AND Scots. Scotland is one of my favorite places to visit, mostly because of the people I’ve met there.

I’ve always said if you ever wanna break in and steal something in West Texas wait till Friday night every business in town is shutdown by 6...:D:eek:

Amen. One of my favorite places.

Dang, those folks can drink. The drunker they get, the heavier their dang accent got. I spent many many nights bar hopping on Rose St. in Edindurgh, and in those rowdy bars in Glasgow. Never got a Glasgow kiss. I even shot in their championship at Blair Atholl back 78.

Allen high school also recruits players from all over the state. Parents move there so their kid can play football there

Mike, I'm sure you have proof of this or did you read it on the inner net. Ain't no oilfield jobs in Allen, Tx. In these days and times the vetting process is very complete. I do know of a couple great ones that transferred in and after vetting moved on.

If you want to see a town empty out on an away game, go to Port Neches-Grove in a playoff game. The police even leave. You can fire shots all over town and never hit anybody.

In the 70's PNG and Odessa Permian played a couple of State Championship games in the Astrodome. Those crowds had the highest attendance on record for HS football in the Dome.

Texas use to have a rule that if you transferred to a new school, you had to lay out for 1 year before you could participate in UIL sports. Now they can play at one school this year and a different one next year. With the high value of scholarships and possible pro contracts, one parent will rent an apartment at a good football school while daddy stays home, just to get the kids exposure.

Actually saw a news show about it with interviews with the parents. I forget your the forum know it all

I grew up in Odessa and attended Permian High School. I didn't play ball, but the guys who I played with and against starting in elementary school won the State Championship in 1980, my Junior year. The school colors are Black and White. AC/DC's Back in Black came out over the summer of 1980, and it was only natural that we adopted that theme for the football season. Our main rivals were always the Lee High School Rebels in Midland and the Cooper Cougars in Abilene. In fact, P.E. Shotwell Stadium became Permian's second home during the play-off season.

That State Championship game was played against Thomas Jefferson High School from Port Arthur, at the old Texas Stadium, in Irving. Jefferson had an outstanding team that year including an awesome duo of quarterback and receiver. They set records all season. Some of which have still not been broken.

It was immortalized by KOSA TV and rebroadcast on Sunday. The video is on Youtube... Here is the link.

First half,

Second half,

That was one hell of a ball game!

Now, fast forward to 1995 or so. I was a Drill Sgt. at Ft Sill. As was the routine, I was getting in the Privates' faces and asking them where they were from and giving them a hard time about it no matter where home was. One such young soldier said he was from Port Arthur, TX.

"Did you go to Jefferson High School, Private?" I inquired with.... uhmmm, emphasis.

"Yes, Drill Sergeant!" came his terrified reply.

I dropped him for push ups and messed with him every time I saw him, which was several times each day. Every time I asked him where he went to High School, he would tell me and I would drop him. After about week four of BCT, when we started BRM, I loosened up and broke the ice a bit the the Privates in the platoon.

I eventually asked him, "Private Jones, I'll bet you're wondering why I keep asking you where you went to school and F*** with you about it.

"Yes, Drill Sergeant..." came his nervous reply.

"What is the winningest High School football team in Texas history?" I asked him.

After a moment, understanding came across his face, then dread, "Oh... you went to Permian."

"Drop, Private Jones!" He did. As he was pushing down Oklahoma I let him know, "You might want to forget where you went to school next time I ask."

I told him to recover and we had an understanding. Curiously, next time I asked, he couldn't remember.

Ahh, good times.

Anyway, the year after I graduated, construction began on the new Ratliff Stadium (named for the family who donated the land). That is the stadium which is seen in the film Friday Night Lights.

Also, in the Spring of 1982, when I was a Senior, I bought my first AR-15, an original Colt Sporter. I used to shoot jack rabbits with that rifle all over West Texas. My parents thought I had lost my mind (You bought a machine gun!).

OK, off my soap box.

This is the truth!

If the price of oil goes down and stays down, TEXAS will be in a depression.

This is what happened over the summer of 1982. I had just graduated HS and had never know a slack economy. Depression hit like nothing West Texas had ever seen. Odessa was a great place to grow up and escape from. I moved to Austin and discovered Hills and Lakes and Trees!

There is enough, beef, cotton and wild game in Texas that they can feed and clothe themselves. As i see it, oil has been low and oil has been high, hurricane floods have been high. Texas is still there thriving on their ability to be diverse in economics.

Iowa without corn would be where?
