Is Texas HS football big!

My long ago Little League baseball catcher is the head coach of the Allen High School football team.
Their relativity new stadium.

Terry Gambill has grown into a fine young man, family man, and coach of what may be called the top football program in Texas or the USA. No, they don't win State every year, but have a tremendous record year in and year out.
We still share weekly emails.

There is a well known saying that is very true: "Everything is BIGGER in Texas"! Cities are bigger, ranches are bigger, South Texas deer are bigger, off shore "Viking" fishing boats are bigger and of course in the contiguous states, Texas is bigger! I moved to Arizona 4 years ago, and let me tell you, Arizona, as a state, (not just in size) isn't a pimple on Texas' rear end! I bet no other state is either!

Years ago in Texas, they closed the high schools on the Friday before the second Saturday in November so all the kids could go to opening day of rifle deer season. Don't get in the way of football or hunting season in Texas.

Nothing prepared me for the difference in football moving from ND to Midland TX my sr year of high school.

The first time our band took the field in Ratliff stadium I couldn’t believe it was a high school field. It seats 20,000+ I was told.

There’s absurd corruption in west TX football too. I started school at Midland High and learned that while Lee was a contender for UIL 5a title every year, MHS has been winless the previous two seasons. Yes, two public high schools, one winless in two years, the other a perpetual contender. And Odessa was the same story with OHS (awful) and Permian (perpetual contenders).

Midland high won a game that year. One win in 3 years. Lee made State. Again.

Hopefully they value an education as well. It’s hard to make a career playing football.
Not at all. You could be functionally illiterate and graduate if you can run or catch well.

My sister teaches at Permian now.

Got to love high school sports, as it teaches so many life lessons. Miss the days when my own sons were playing. Sports are a window into the future, where we get to see what these you people's character could be. Fortunately for me my sons played semi pro baseball and I get to dispense wisdom, homilies, and useless general knowledge from the dugout. When not in the dugout, I am keeping an eye on my grand daughters in the play area. At 31 my youngest is closer to the end than the beginning, but my oldest grand daughter starts high school soon. Glad to see the good people of Texas have a great high school football tradition. Sometimes your the wind shield and some times the bug.

If I remember correctly, at one point, Midland Lee had their own plane. Not sure if it actually was owned by the ISD, or was a "loaner" from one of the smaller oil companies.
Texas HS football was/ is a huge deal. I went to Greenwood HS, just east of Midland back in the mid-80s. Still to this day, the only grass in the Greenwood area is the
football field.

In the early years Odessa Permian had the use of an airplane. Allen does not share their football field. Believe it or not they have an 800 member band. Also, they built a $60 million performing arts center adjacent to the football stadium.
Though a little higher economic area, 48% are minority.

If the price of oil goes down and stays down, TEXAS will be in a depression.
That statement may or may not be true, there's more to Texas than oil. I've never seen as many "Help Wanted" signs as I am currently seeing. Not all in the "Oil Patch" either.

Back to Football. The first year all the Texas High School football championship games were played in ATT Stadium, AKA Jerry World, My little wife and I attended. Started Thursday with the small 11 man schools and ended Saturday night with 6A. Somewhere in that weekend, Allen HS gave Pearland HS and old fashioned butt kicking. The amazing part of the show was the Allen HS Band, there nearly wasn't enough room for all of them on the field.

Isn't Texas the only state where a male child can't start school until age 9 ?

Please post your reference.

My son started Kinder at 5 and a year later in 1st grade.

This is what I read.

"State policy specifically permits. TEC §42.003(c) states that a child may be enrolled in first grade if he or she is 6 years old by the beginning of the school year, has been enrolled in a first grade program in another state, or has successfully completed kindergarten in another state. Any five-year-old child may be assigned to 1st grade is the local district determines it appropriate. More information is available in the Frequently Asked Questions and Answers: Kindergarten."

If we spent as much money on vocational programs as we do on football Texas would rule the world........even more!;)

If the price of oil goes down and stays down, TEXAS will be in a depression.

Texas knows that all too well, thus the creation of the "rainy day fund"

Texas legislators won't use rainy day fund until January | The Texas Tribune

For comparison, this report was generated in 2016. You can see how much the Texas Economic Stabilization Fund, aka."rainy day fund" has grown.

The Texas Economic Stabilization Fund

He's just jealous he's not a Texan. Goes back to the old saying, " never ask a man where he's from, if he's a Texan, he'll tell you soon enough, if he's not, dont embarrass him".
My daughter started kindergarten at 5, graduated high school with 32 college credits, BS Texas Tech, MBA Texas A&M. I'd say Texas schools are OK.
