Is my thinking correct?

Is my thinking correct that I can take my 6br barrel and have someone punch my chamber out to a 6bra or one of the other improved versions? Or do I have to have a complete rechamber?

Thanks
Kris

I’ve done this many times, I recommend you go in at least the length of the neck to eliminate any chance of a step. If say the old neck was .270 and new neck is .271 you’ll have a step if you don’t go in the exact amount as old.

You may have to set the shoulder back or cut part of the tenon to get proper headspace, but it can be minimal with a few calculations.

No complete rechamber at all. If I were helping going from BR to BR-AI I`d move shoulder of current barrel in .010" to .015" and adjust tenon length same amount then run in new BR-AI reamer to headspace where new brass closes with a little tension on close. Providing you consider such obvious differences such as neck diameters you`ll be good to go. I have done this on my personal barrels and worked just fine.

It was part of Ackley's original concept that you could do exactly that, run an Ackley sized reamer in a standard sized chamber.

It was also part of the plan to be able to shoot cartridges of the standard size in the new Ackley chamber so that you could buy off the shelf ammo, shoot it in the modified chambered rifle and have Ackley shaped brass by fire forming it.
