Is it really worth it? Varget.

Ive tested with Varget but never had a rifle that liked it. A friend just yesterday found out his 6XC loves it and I gave him my condolences. I may give him my Varget. I have a number of cartridges that really shoot great with IMR-4166 and in addition, it is temp stable and has a decoppering agent that works great in my rifles. Ive reduced my target shooting by 90% and only do hunting and load development now. Let Chris Hodgdon and Vista eat powder. Ive loaded enough to last me a while as I put my reloading equip in storage for 8 months while we move to a more gun friendly state.

VV N150 does real good in my .308 with 167g Lapua Scenars. I shot a 199-6X at 300 yrs at an event. I doubt any other powder would have bettered my score. Most times it comes down to the person pulling the trigger, not the equipment mostly.

Considering I only use Varget for 5.56/.223, primarily 69 grainers or heavier, long range/target loads I'll pay whatever I need to when I run out.

At $70/pound for .223 that works out to around 25 cents per round.

That's funny. My general load to check a rifle is 43 grains of Varget with a 175 SMK, loaded to 2.800 - 2.820. If it won't shoot that, something's probably wrong with the gun.
The rifle shoots amazing groups, nothing wrong with it just because it doesn't like the magical varget. There are much better options than varget for me. Its the first powder out of most mouths on several calibers and tops on the "i cant get it list". None of my rifles shoot groups bigger than .5 and none shoot varget. Im good with that

My experience with Varget reminds me of H4831. While I've had good experiences with Varget there was always one other powder which was better for me. Be it AR-Comp, RL-15 CFE223 etc. The same holds true for me with H4831. Good but never the best. JME

Oh, I'm finding primes but refuse to pay rip-off prices for them. They had some at the gun show but was selling them at $20 per tray of 100 or $179.00 per brick of 1k. No way, I'll find another hobby till the insanity calms back down. Been through this too many times in the past.

That is insane. I hope the seller took them all back home.

When we had the last powder crisis , I had 8lbs. of H-4895 , and 6 lbs. of Varget . The Varget was my primary powder , but it quickly disappeared off the shelves , and I switched to the H-4895 . A wise , older guy suggested I look at the IMR 4064 and I did . There was plenty on the shelves everywhere then , and I got a 1 lb. to try out . Did some load development , and never looked back . Still have about 3-1/2 lbs. of Varget sitting on my shelf collecting dust , three years later . The IMR-4064 works really good in my rifle with the 185 Jugg Target .
