Is it possible to buy Cosmoline today?

Bad thing it makes wooden rifle stocks pucker or swell up any oil or grease will do this.if no wooden stock I'd say go for it

Honestly you would probably be better off buying pure carnauba wax and slathering it on.

Like McGuire's car polish

Many fellas going on long hunts in wet environments use carnauba wax.idk just a thought

But wax comes right off no harm no foul

Been used my many to preserve very expensive firearms especially restoring milsurps to not destroy value or bubba a gun with with a sealer that wasn't original to firearm

The NRA Museum uses Microcrystalline Wax & temperature, humidity controlled rooms.

Microcrystalline wax, particularly products like Renaissance Wax, are often used and recommended for protecting firearms, including metal and wood surfaces, due to their moisture-resistant and protective qualities

For metal, short term storage, Break Free CLP.

Or - MIL-PRF-63460F Type A

Yeah the Renaissance wax is a great idea

I use to get cosmoline from Eastwood in a spray can when I was doing a lot of automotive restoration.
Might be worth checking out

Yeah on top of what I've already mentioned really any kind of modern grease.heck can of white lithium grease spray up inside barrel, tube of cheap boat trailer wheel bearing grease heck that's what I use on my garands for the lube points.

I hate cosmoline myself after all my years of cleaning up milsurps.uhgaaa

I've had a lot of rust underneath it also sometimes but I guess sitting who knows where for 60-100+yrs it can happen.lol

I discovered Rig a few years ago. I put some on a dry clean cotton rag. I use cotton gloves, then rub the grease all over the FA. I can put up a nice blued semi auto, or rifle for a few years, pick it up, wipe it down with another soft cotton rag and it is perfect. I have to fight my GF not to throw a way my worn out dress shirts or t-shirts. I cut into big pieces, wash them carefully in NO fragrance soap, rinse thoroughly and I have the best gun rags available. I have a dozen t-shirt rags w mineral oil lightly sprinkled in for everyday gun handling.

As already mentioned a few times “ RIG “ universal gun grease. I put it on and don’t worry about it. Have used it for many years and it just plain works. It’s not nasty like cosmoline.

Another +1 for RIG. When my daughter was in middle school (30 or so years ago) she did a "science" experiment to test several rust preventatives. I drove 8 or 10 16 penny nails through a board. Each nail was then treated with a different rust preventative. We then buried the board in the garden nails down for a couple months. When pulled back up the only treatment that beat RIG was two coats of Rustoleum paint.

I’ve been using RIG 20+ years. Great stuff. I went Alaska with a nice blued double rifle. I rubbed it down with RIG before the trip and then wiped it off like wax. I got caught in a few rain showers. The only places that had any rust were the places I obviously missed, lol. Great for storage and great for blued guns in wet conditions.
