Is it possible to anneal too often?

Some very interesting articles there – BIG thanks! I am still reading through them since it has been a busy day here but here are some random thoughts:

That McBride article shows that water quenching was not as good as air cool after annealing that is very interesting. I wonder what we can make of this since many of us do in fact use water quenching to cool our brass and and the conventional thinking has always been that it does not affect the brass or the annealing process. The data in the article is of course an N=1 so not too significant but still…..

The article from The Pacific Journal of Science and Technology shows a leveling of Hardness, tensile strength, impact energy and yield strength seems to level off (at least it does not appear to undergo an abrupt transition like between 240-250) even at 800 degrees C which would suggest that further heating does not increase softness – at first I thought too bad he did not heat it up to even higher temps but the Olin article shows that the melting point of cartridge brass is in fact at 955 degree C so 800 is pretty close to that. So what is the truth, does overheated brass gets soft and loose all its spring back as mentioned in the Ken Light article?

Two interesting things to ponder over….

The way I understand it...lets say you heat the case to 700 degrees for three seconds. Lets give that value X. If you turned around and did it again, not shoot them, just re annealed them...700 for three seconds.....the value would still be X...not X + X. The brass would not have been softened or annealed any more, unless you increase the time or the temp, or both.

For me it's going to be anneal every time!!

If you are more informed than this third grader, please chime in. I just purchesed my Bench Sorce and very much enjoy using it!!
It's been a while since I read the reports on the AMPS website. They say that annealing twice in a row gave them a very small change in hardness. Doesn't make sense but they have the numbers and they do very good metallurgical analysis.

Ten year old post
Nice to see some names I haven’t in quite some time
FWIW I never annealed then and I don’t now

Not at all. I got to see some names from the past .
I couldn’t give two shits what his intent may have been according to you.

I wouldn't want to see all the old post deleted, but I think it would be nice if they could be "locked" after an appropriate time frame. Or at least a big red screen pop up with a message to the effect advising that the last post is "x" years old and do you really want to add your post for all to see?

Are people advocating that threads over 3 years old have no value. Most things shooting related are as relevant now as they where when first posted. I hate it when people delete from older posts. Especially when it's just the pictures.

you are correct 4xforfun. The gents from AMP annealing made a video enplaning it.
