Is it necessary to pull scope and stock to change barrels?

I apologize if this has been discussed a bunch.

One of these days I will have a switch barrel 7RM and 338RUM LR rifle on an Underground Skunkworks action. I have a barrel vise and an action wrench. Can I put the barrel in the vise right up to where it would almost bump the objective of the scope and tighten down the vise to remove the action from the barrel? Or do I need to remove the scope and stock and have the vise right next to the action? (and why?)

Thanks!

I always remove the scope, because the shock of heavy torque in re-installing the barrel can disturb the erector tube. The stock usually can stay on. If you are removing a barrel from a Savage, the stock must be removed, cause the barrel nut is in the way.

What the *@%> is a Underground Skunkworks action. You kiddin?

Underground skunkworks is a gunsmith. He has Defiance put his name on actions. He has change the name of his company a few years ago to Blackops I think.
Has a good reputation along the lines of GAPrecision and SAC with tac rifles.

I myself like the name and would like to find one of his UGSW rifles reasonable just to "have".

I can leave the scope and stock on if I use a read entry action wrench, if I use one that enters through the loading port I have to remove the scope as there is not enough clearance with the scope and wrench. I was surprised how little the zero changed after taking the scope off and putting it back on, I use a Picatinny rail and Burris XTR rings.

I remove them all with the stock in place, unless the barrel profile won't allow it...
Not sure how it would put any strain on the scope unless you used it to hold on to...

Heavy torque from reinstalling a barrel? How hard do you twist after it stops moving? Also, the rifle is a 7RUM and .338RUM. I suspect a fair amount of scope (and shooter) abuse happens with every trigger pull.

Would that be on your Savage, Erik? ;-)

It all depends on if there is room in the barrel channel and under the scope objective bell. As far as other considerations go, you can leave it all together. On my bench rifles, the barrel taper, barrel channel and scope clearance do not pose a problem. I use a Davidson style barrel vise and a rear entry action wrench, with a T handle. It is all pretty straightforward, and takes no time. I do not use a torque wrench, and I tighten my barrels significantly. Because everything is square, they do not squeeze down to a stop. They stop rotation fairly abruptly, none of this reference mark stuff. There is no significant shock, when I take the barrel off, or put it on.

It's really quite a simple process. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then these are worth a lot more. Watch the two Youtube videos I referenced above. :)

I do the same thing.

why at the muzzle? seems like you would get more stability closer to the base, so if you were to leave the stock on, just clamp as close to the stock as you can.

is it for toque reasons, making it easier to remove the barrel?

I am not aware of anyone in the short range benchrest game that does not clamp as close to the end of the forend as is practical. Doing it that way (clamping near the forend)
puts less stress on the table that the vise is clamped to.

I don't use a table. It at a match, there is usually someone with a bumper hitch barrel vise so I use that. The reason I clamp close to the muzzle is because the bumper is usually in the way. If I do it on my own in the field, I clamp my vise on barrel and put the vise behind tire on ground to loosen barrel and in front of tire to tighten it.
