Is it easy removing engraving from barrel?

A manufacturer must mark his firearm with the caliber, licensee name, town & state as well as serial number. Best bet is to go to ATFEs' web site and get their definition of "manufacture". In a nut shell it means the licensee owns the serial numbered part and is altering it from the way it left the factory (think Rem 700 the licensee bought to build a 'custom' on) and will be offering it "for sale". If the gunsmith buys a Stiller action and builds a rifle using it, and will be offering it "for sale", that's considered 'manufacturing' (because the the action wasn't a complete, ready to shoot rifle when it left the previous owner). If a gunsmith re-barrels your rifle, that's a gunsmithing (repair/modification) task, because you own the receiver (serial numberd part) and you will be getting it back when the work is completed. Confused yet? There's much more to it than what I've posted. Like I said, visit ATFEs' web site for the details.

Clear as mud. Like most BATFE regulations.
Regs and laws written by lawyers for lawyers to interperate. Not just firearms law, most every law past in modern day. It keeps the average man "in the dark". Make sense? Not at all! Leaves those applying/enforcing the law alot of flexability. Postulate the reasons things are they way they are for yourself!

Easy enough depending on how your gunsmith's equipped. I had one rechambered, the smith milled a flat where the old chamber spec had been cut in pretty deep then added his own info for the new chamber.

Another I know does just a simple production number, nothing else.

I don't believe there's anything illegal about leaving a barrel plain but most smiths I know feel it's safer if they ID what chamber's been cut.

Shortgrass thanks, Don't think I'm going to worry about anyone checking me. Even living in New York State!

My smith would not leave it blank. I have a rifle caliber that is banned at a local range and he would not mark it differently than the chamber.

I was able to get him mark it in a spot that was hidden. When I got the tube I just put my own caliber mark on it and local range time is kosher again.

To the op just have your smith put the old marking in the stock channel. I do like the mill it flat and stamp the new caliber.

A private peson need not worry, Joe. A FFL , on the other hand, can have his life made miserable by ATFE. "Knock on wood", both times I've been inspected they've left happy.
