Is F-Class for second class shooters?

HaHa,
I tried Highpower with a 1903 Mark 1,
Sling and glove, no coat but wasn't very good with it.
Now with F-Class I am doing better (group size).
When I get older (in my 70s now) I'll move to the highly respected Bench Rest.
I respect the open sight guys I have seen shooting. They know their stuff.
Maybe this summer I'll drag out the 1903 (1918) and shoot it some.

I'd like to see an optics class in the regular 3-position Highpower.

Getting old sucks but I don't want to quit Highpower.
Not many iron sights at the highpower matches I shoot in the Midwest. 4.5x Scopes on Service rifles and most match rifle shooters running Elisio or Tubb type with up to 20x scopes.

F Class shooters are shooters that have become too old and or too fat to hold a rifle up with a sling or snowflake millennials that don't know squat about how to use iron/aperture sights!
I don't know about too old and fat but, I went to more funerals then
I can count that shot irons. I personally never liked to shoot at a target
that was the size of a barn door. 81 mortar worked better.....

Shoot your favored discipline and have fun.

22 years later and the feelings are still raw? I am a sling shooter but I can see the benefit of F-Class as an easier way for new shooters to get involved. Yes, F-Class was initially formed for those who needed some accommodation due to age and/or disability but there is no denying that it has become an entry to shooting sports in general. I know some who started with F-Class and transitioned to High Power. Some of us older shooters (meaning me) who have medical issues (9 blown discs from neck to tail bone) require some accommodation. I still shoot sling but now it is seated at a bench. Both the NRA and CMP allow shooters with disabilities accommodation for their issues.
There is room for everyone on the line, we can all get along.

Seems to be more common these days of people dragging up old long dead threads especially where the subject or information is no longer relevant. So I just have to ask , WHY ?
It's the weather.
All winter long we blame stupid threads on "It's Cold Outside".
Here we are, 107* in the shade today, It's gotta be the weather.

Global warming,,, OOPS! I means climate change, sorry greenies.

It's either the weather or it's Trump's fault.

So why did you bring this thread back up, with shitty comments, after 12 years?

It would appear that you are just a trouble making troll. This forum doesn't need that kind of BS.

Way to keep it classy, M14.

I'm a sling shooter. There's some good natured ribbing in our club between the sling and F-class guys, but it's all friendly. I'm not leaving the sling side of the firing line any time soon, but if I get too old or too fat or too crippled up to put on a coat and sling, then I'll shoot F-class. I'd rather shoot F-class than park my butt on the couch in front of the TV all summer.

F-class has the primary factors that affect their score in a different order than sling shooters, no doubt. You have to have a rifle and ammo combination capable of shooting x's and 10's first and foremost, then wind reading, and then shot execution. The rests and bags they use take a lot of the "traditional" fundamentals of marksmanship (sight alignment, trigger control, follow through, etc) out of the equation, but those get replaced by proper rest/bag setup, gun handling, etc.

Sling shooters focus on fundamentals of marksmanship and executing a good shot first, then wind reading, and then ammo/rifle mechanical accuracy (at least I do). Nailing the wind call shooting a Palma gun doesn't do much good if the rifle is pointed in the 7 ring. A ~1 moa capable rifle (sling target x-ring) isn't terribly difficult these days. A 1 moa hold isn't something everyone can achieve.

F-class guys could learn a thing or two from sling shooters about consistency and the traditional fundamentals of marksmanship. They could learn from a seasoned Palma shooter some tips and tricks for the sure 'nuff wind reading that's required to keep a 155 gr .308 in the middle at 1000 yards.

Sling guys could learn a thing or two about reloading and mechanical accuracy from the F-class guys. Cutting 1/2 MOA off your load at 1000 yards buys some wind reading error and helps pile up the X's. I'm not going to pretend that an F-open guru that piles 15-17 shots into a 5" circle at 1000 yards can't teach me something about wind, either. Extreme mechanical accuracy and mechanical rests/bags help, sure, but that's impressive wind calling. Acting like a lot of these guys don't know what they are doing is just foolish.

Regardless, chill out, realize that F-class guys are on the same team, and quit being a grumpy old man. You've made a similar reply on one of my posts that was just uncalled for. There's no place for it on this site.

Sounds like you're a great shooter and are also in great shape. At your next match you should show off for everyone.

Your next highpower match:
1. Do ten 40 yard gassers before every string. Must take less than 25 seconds each or you need to do it again.
2. Shoot at the FClass target with your iron/aperture sights.

THEN: report back on how well you did so you can show us how awesome you are

Exercises in self validation are always popular. It's human nature . . .

We're all on the same side, right? None of the competitive disciplines are easy. I've never run across a shooter that quit the game because the challenge is gone and they've tired of winning all the time. Maybe others have, but I have not.

Lots of things have to come together properly to clean a target, whether one is driving a pistol, a Palma rifle, a TR rifle, an F Open rifle, whatever. Manners would have one recognize this fact and respect the preferences and the skills of others.

I shot smallbore in a coat and sling in my youth. I spent more than a few years driving a service rifle. I now choose to shoot F Open because it 'speaks to me', not because I'm too old and too fat to do anything else. I may very well be a second-class shooter, but that's a reflection of what I have yet to learn, and I look forward to the learning process. I see Norm Harrold clean a 1K target at a tough and unpredictable range with a 90% X-count and I know I have a LOT to learn. Hell, I'll stipulate that I do not yet know all of the relevant questions, much less possess the answers to them.

So, I may very well be a second-class shooter, but it has nothing to do with F-Class.

We put the sling guys out from under the awning at monthly matches during the summer just so they can prove how tough they are. And between strings, even though we shoot on electronics, we make them split firewood with a dull maul to simulate pulling frames.

But seriously, reading this from 10 years ago is amazing. Aged like milk.
