Is .284 Win. The Real Deal?

My reamer is for a turn neck, it was cut by Dave Kiff at PTG.
.313 neck
.220 freebore- recommended by Eric Cortina, and its perfect for staying out of neck/shoulder area with 162amax,168berger/180berger. (thanks Eric)

If you neck up Lapua brass, you will most likely develope a donut. This .220 freebore will give you the room to stay out of that area, plus maximizing case capacity.

This is the spec for both my .284 Win and .284 Shehane reamers. Coincidentally, when Erik built his .284 Win Panda, PT&G had not delivered his reamer and he borrowed mine. They are exactly the same. [br]
The .220" freebore works well for every bullet I have tried. That is: 180 Hybrids, 180 VLD, 175 XLD and 180 BT-LR.

I will be building a .284 on a Savage Target short action with a Brux pre-fit from Sharp Shooter Supply. Does anyone have experience with their barrels and how his barrels are chambered?

I believe, at least with my .284, that Lapua brass is the way to go. I had a bolt click issue with the winchester brass after 6 firings, and that I think I know why. Remember, If you are wanting to neck up Lapua brass, a .284win reamer is not what you want. A .284 reamer cut for Lapua brass is what you want.
winchester brass is .003-.004" smaller at the head than the Lapua brass. I think that is why I only get 6 reloads on the win brass.

Thanks for the reminder.

Brux makes a great barrel, however I hope you got the barrel from SSS already. I ordered an action and base from them in January and still don't have it.

I might give them a call Monday to check. If it's going to be too long, I'll try to get a blank and take it the smith that rebarrelled my F-T/r rifle.

This is what I would do. I was promised a month! And well you have heard how well that worked out. I would stay away from them. A very good FTR guy I shoot with sware's by Nat L. I would try him.

Or give Accurate Ordnance a call. That's who does my work.

I use Dixie Precision Rifles, dprifles.com. MSTrophyhunter on this forum and msgunowners.com is the machinist. He has done some incredibly accurate rifles, including my F-T/r.

Update: MSTrophyHunter has my action, stock, and barrel. He's going to install the barrel and bed the action. He said he should have it ready in three weeks! He's also building a .223AI for a friend and should have it ready at the same time.

Never heard 1 guy say they HATE the 284. Some may like other 7mm's better but not hated the 284. Unless there personal project gun was a dinger and just wouldn't shoot. What's not to like about the 284 whether you hunt or shoot matches with it. I'm sure I'll get some guys crawl out of the wood shed and tell me how much they hate the 284 they owned. I guess I asked for it !!!

+1 on DPR and Alton Britt for precision gun smithing. I would put his work up there with some of the "artist" in the industry.

Ya I did after I responded to it. Was actually online looking up some info regarding the 284 and throating that chamber. That accurate shooter posting popped up so as I read it I responded to someone's love/hate for that round. Kinda late on the trigger. Oh well.

I'm having second thoughts about an upcoming 7MM Rem Mag build, since a .284 seems like a sensible option. I'll use it for LR hunting, and 300-600 yard target shooting.

I haven't seen many posts about the .284 recently. What are your thoughts on the .284 for my intended use? Bullet choice? Powder?

Does it work in a short action, or a long like a 30-06?

I took delivery on a custom 284 Win earlier this year. It's a heavy gun with a 29" target contour Bartlein barrel and a blueprinted Rem 700 long action. The chamber is throated for for the Berger 168 VLD Hybrids. The neck is .315 and COAL is 3.14 @ .030 off the lands. My powder is RL-17 and 53 gr. of that is pushing the Bergers at about 3100 fps. with no flattened primers or stiff bolt lift. According to my Lyman manual, this exceeds standard 7mm Mag performance with far less powder. Accuracy is excellent so far but I'm not done yet... Recoil is very mild but then again, its a 12 lb. gun. With a lighter contour maybe 26" barrel it would still push the 168 VLD's at around 3000 fps and make a nice medium weight hunting gun without sacrificing the target shooting you want to do.

Good Luck!

I was contemplating a new build for F-Open when I attended the BERGER SW Long Range Nationals this year so I asked a lot of shooters (Both successful and not so successful) about the .284 Winchester and its progeny the 284 Shehane and other calibers. Not truly a formal"SURVEY", but I asked the same questions of many folks (there were literally hundreds of shooters there) and MANY of them (after I had kinda found the 284 to be the caliber/round of choice and had decided on that) suggested I should NOT go with the Shehane and that if they had it to do all over again (among the Shehane shooters), they wouldn't go to the Shehane, but would leave it as an original 284 spec.

So....that is what I built and have just shot it some to check loads, speeds and to break in my new barrel. It is as follows: Rem 700 (Long) action blueprinted by LRI, PT&G Bolt, Krieger 9:1 barrel (LW Varmint contour finished to 26") chambered by LRI with their "Sniper" reamer, Timney Calvin Elite Trigger, Choate Machine stock w/ adjustable cheek piece, VORTEX Golden Eagle HD scope (all M.O.A.), 20 MOA rail and Weaver 6 screw low rings. So far the load I am liking is H4350 which gives me a 2797 average speed, SD of 6.0 (!!!!) with the Berger 7mm 180 grain HYBRID TARGET (#28407) and no signs of pressure in either Lapua (6.5-284 reformed to 7mm) or NORMA brass using Federal GM210M Primers. Groups are way under 1/2 MOA at 200 yards in kinda windy conditions and being shot by a 70 year old guy (ME) on a not great day, but not too bad.

EDIT: The only negative I can think of about the 284 Winchester is that brass CAN be hard to find and can get spendy when you do find it. I hear that Winchester still makes it occasionally, but that only happens every couple of years (and I don't know how true/not true that is, as I have never ever found any) A lot of guys (me included for 100 pieces) have bought 6.5-284 LAPUA brass and run it over a mandrel to get it back to 7mm. (I think it is kinda goofy to wind up making the "parent" brass out of what was once more or less a wildcat that went commercial, but that is the way it goes sometimes! (LAPUA 6.5-284 is not all that hard to find and is pretty good brass, just 'spensive!). NORMA is now making 284 Winchester brass, but it is spendy...I have purchased a hundred of the NORMA cases, but at about a buck twenty each that can be kinda heart stopping.
