284 win barrel

Well I've been thinking of switching from 7mm-08 to 284 win. I could ream my current barrel and rechamber it to 284 win. My plan is using a long action with 284 setup. I was wondering what your thoughts are using a 24" barrel with the 284 win and 168 vld's. I would like to see around 2850 fps plus with 168's using hodgdon powder. Not much of a fan of RL-17.Curious if anyone running a barrel under 26".

My current 7mm-08 168 load is getting around 2740fps. Looking to reach a 1K with a little more speed and energy without going magnum. Keep in mind i do plan to carry the rifle in the field.

I think you will be okay velocity wise with powders such as H4350, RL19 & H4831SC. I had very good accuracy with RL17 in a 6.5 x . 284 and plan to try it when my new .284 arrives. Good Luck - great cartridge, I am waiting on my 3rd .284 now.

My 284 loves H4350. I think that speed is possible with the barrel length you have and the bullets your shooting. granit I have a 30" tube but I am getting 2955 with 175's and 3200 with 162's.

H4831 also works very well with 168 - 180 grain bullets. My .284 Winchester model 70 has a 26" Shilen light varmint countour barrel (0.700" muzzle diameter) and consistently produces 1-3/8 " 3-shot groups at 300 meters, shooting prone using a bipod. I am sure I am the limiting factor as far as precision goes. One of my buddies thought I was BSing him, so he shot a 300 meter 3 shot group that measured 1.36 inches. Made a believer out of him. I use 3-shot groups in my hunting rifles because, unlike match rifles with heavier barrels, which are used to fire longer shot strings, hunting situations will more than likely give you opportinities to take no more than 2 or 3 shots.

Muzzle velocity is 2945 fps. Bullets are 168 gr. Sierra MKs loaded to Sierra's published max. load for H4831 with the buillets seated 0.010" from the rifling, using Wolf Russian L. R. primers.

Now it's on to developing a hunting load with Berger 168 gr. VLD Hunting bullets.
