Irons at 1000 yards

I'm still new to 1000 yard prone shooting. So far the shooting I've done has been with a scope, and I'm at the point where the investment in iron sight are next on the list of things to buy for my match rifle....

So far this is what I'm looking at...

RPA rear sight set up for a weaver rail mounting with a Gehmann model 566 rear iris and anti glare tube.

For the front sight, I'm looking at Sinclair's 22mm match rifle model, with a Centra crossbeam front iris, a centra 1.5x magnifying diopter, 1 or 2 centra glare tubes, and of corse a spirit level of some sort.

Am I going along the right track, or do I need to revisit some of my choices?

If cost is a secondary factor, which, at least when I put together a competition rifle, I try to make it secondary!!, I would look at the following:

Warner rear sight, LR model, gets you more windage), the Gehmann apeture of your choice and get a RightSight 30mm up front with an appropriate lens, probably .5 or .75,you wont be able to run a lens in the back then, but you shouldnt need it). I run that setup and you will see a bunch of the big dogs running the same. Why? Cause it works...well, very well.

YMMV however, but you asked. ,BTW, I have a RPA but it resides on my practice spacegun and I would never dream of sticking it back on one of my competition rifles.....I wont tell you how many Warners I own, but lets just say its more than I would want my wife to know about!)

I concur with the Warner rear sight if your budget will stand the expense. If not, there are several others that will do the job for less. The PNW rear is also used by the Palma team members and so is a good sight. Centra is another, you just need to look at some sights at the next match.

A big 10-4 on that 30 mm front sight. That is a must have along with the front diopter. You can actually read the number boards with that sight. Make sure you get the adjustable front iris that goes from 4-6mm. That way you will have plenty of iris adjustment with a magnified target.

This is something to think about. Rear scope rails. I prefer the variety that do not have the iron sight mount built in. There are those that do. You just have to figure out which one will work for you.

Purchase the Warner #2 rear sight with the Gehmann aperture of choice, when cleaned & lubed they will last you a lifetime.
A 22mm or 30mm front tunnel with Gehmann or Anschutz iris' are a better choice than the Centra's IMO.
My 4each #1's & 1each #2 Warner rear sights have served me very well,& function 10-15 years later as if purchased yesterday.

+1 on Warner on the rear and RightSight on the front. You might as well get the best now because that is where you will end up when all is said and done -- the best there is.

Another rear sight option is the Phoenix Precision. I've got one of those and I like it. As for Centra and RPA, they use different scales from the Warner/PNW/Phoenix. They are 3 minutes per revolution but 5 minutes on the vernier scale whereas the others are 3 minutes per revolution and 3 minutes on the vernier. Just something to be aware of. I've got and use Centra, Phoenix and Warner. All are capable but the Warner is the best. For front sights I prefer the Riles in 22mm globe size with a 1.5 lens. I haven't tried the 30mm so I can't comment on that but people who have them love them. Centra or Gehman diopters and irises are both good.

Here's another vote for the Riles front sight. I've yet to try one of the 30mm sights, but am very satisfied with the 22mm Riles sights I have. I used a Centra 1.9-4.1 iris with a 1.5x lens in the first Riles, and it gives me all the range of adjustment needed for targets from 100 to 1000yds.

Also have three PNWs with service rifle threads - all are designed to mount on Redfield-type bases, and that would be the type of mount I'd recommend. I'm in the market for another rear sight, and will probably try a Phoenix. Nothing against the PNWs - just want to try the Phoenix.
