Introduction

Hello fellow shooters! i just want to introduce myself and my small collection of firearms. I've been in the army (artillery) for just over 8 years. i grew up in a small town in arkansas and did quite a bit of deer and squirrel hunting growing up. i was first sent into the woods by myself at about 11 years old with a .243 and have been in love with firearms ever since! right now i'm deployed to afghanistan, but prior to this deployment my unit sent me to a short, LRM course before we deployed and i was assigned an M14. when i first came in the army, i had a 30-06, 20 gauge, a daisy 22, and a 30-30. a few years in, i had orders to go to germany. not really thinking about it, i decided to sell all my guns since i couldn't take them with me. fortunately, i sold my daisy to my uncle and he decided to give it back to me as a gift when i eventually returned from my tour in germany. since this deployment, i've decided to step up my game and collection in firearms again. i've bought a rem. 700 SPS .308 with a 26" heavy barrel to start things off. i also own a springfield xd40 which is my CC when i'm out and about in the city. not really wanting to invest a ton of money into the scope (and i know, that's the most important part) i started off by ordering a nikon buckmasters mil dot scope. according to reviews, it has pretty good bang for the buck. i've also got into reloading. when i was a teenager i would help/watch my uncle do his reloading, but he got way too experimental with it so basically i'm erasing my memory and starting back at square 1. my brother referred me to this website, and i'm glad that he did. this website has tons of tips and useful information, especially concerning my .308 and my interest in reloading for it. when i get back from afghanistan, i plan on doing a lot of shooting and reloading thus further improving my shooting skill and having fun doing what i like.

if anyone is from the clarksville/ft campbell area and knows of some good long distance ranges, i'd really be interested in finding out. i do know on post there is an mwr range which has steel silhouettes out to 725 meters (range 16 i believe) but i want to avoid the whole mess of registering it on post, then having to do all the craziness just to get to the range. it's a great range and that's where i did my M14 shooting days at.

Welcome. And there's nothing wrong with a Nikon Buckmaster. I have two or three of them, and think they are indeed a lot of bang for the 'Buck'. ;)

As far as ranges are concerned there a couple in your area. Arnoald Air Force base in Tullahoma TN holds matches pretty much every month.
Ft Knox has a few matches a year. The Famous Oak Ridge rifle club in Oak Ridge TN, My home range over in Memphis. ( thats a fer piece for you however)
We used to get a couple of guys from Cambell that came down and shot with us at Tullahoma. One has since retired and the other is now a rotor head who gave up his bolt gun to sit in a AH.

As far as I know there is not alot of local club or private ranges ( Longer ranges that is) close buy where you could go and just practice or shoot to hone your skills. Agree on the hassle of using the Military range... Pain in the you know what. Takes all the fun out of it.Who Taught your SDM course?

Anyway Welcome aboard. Keep your head down until you pop smoke over there.

Welcome aboard. Thank you for your service. Stay safe and enjoy membership in one of the most informative websites on the internet concerning our mutual fondness for shooting.

Get in touch with Mike Ezell. He's "gunsandgunsmithing" on here. Tell him that Greg Jennings referred him to you. He's in Auburn, KY near Bowling Green and has his finger on the pulse of shooting in the area.

I grew up east of Nashville. There used to be fantastic deer and quail hunting on Ft. Campbell. Good deer hunting over at Land Between The Lakes just west of there, too.

If you fish at all, there is excellent fishing on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley that are the two Lakes of LBTL.

FWIW, Greg J.

Welcome aboard and I also thank you for your service! My cousin bought the same rifle as soon as he got back from Iraq. He and I have shoot together and have a great time. He kept practicing and made the local SERT (swat) team.

Hope you can find a place to practice!

Ken
