Interesting Old Bullet Seater-- Herters

I'll bet I'm not the only guy who is interested in old Herters brand stuff. This is a cut-out bullet seater for 222 Rem. I guess for the guy who wants to be sure the bullet gets started down the neck straight. I haven't tried it -- yet.

The Herters catalog was quite a deal "back in the day". I'd like to get my hands on one of say, 1964 vintage. You could order just about any gun you wanted, delivered to your front door. The book had a preface listing what you might need, and how to survive a nuclear attack. Preppers are nothing new. jd

Yep, I get those dies and convert them to other calibers I reload for,
in the same family of cases/brass, especially for those small 17 calibers etc. :D

So the window on the RCBS Premium die is not a new idea???

A reloader with a catalog would not have to convert anything because Herter called the seating die 'universal'. The same company that made Herter dies made Weatherby dies and a few others.

In the old days a reloader could purchase a die body and a box full of seating plugs and bullet guides.

The fit between the case and die has been improved by the guide but from the beginning alignment between the bullet and case neck was improved. Big difference: There is little to no chance a reloader can sit down and purchases a die body with enough parts and pieces to load two calibers. The exception is the 30/06 and 308, with the addition of an extended shell holder the competition seating die can load both the 30/06 and 308, with additional parts I load the 8mms.

I've got a tricky/oakie idea to sleeve the slotted guide to align a .204 bullet through the .224 portion of this die.

I use the chamber reamer to make new inserts,
sized for the inside diameter of what ever die,
for my calibers, works for me....... ;)

And that would in fact be the best way to solve this issue. I need to go from 222 Rem. to 20-222. Hmmm. jd

You don't need a chambering reamer to make the inserts. Anyone with decent lathe skills can make those inserts from drop off steel with a few drills and tool bits.

A gunsmith named Vickermann was making a straight line seating die when Harvey Donaldson was a journeyman machinist...
I believe Steve Meacham is offering them these days.
