Interested in a 6mm BR...

Hello guys,

I am interested in getting my first 6mmBR. Just looking for some suggestions of where I might start.

Thanks,

Matt

What do you aim to do with it?

My Savage LRPV shoots several loads into easy 1/2" groups and is a very reasonably priced package for what you get.

As stated above you have to decide want you would like to do with the gun. Target shoot or hunt? You need to decide what distance and weight bullet you would like to shoot? If you could post some info like that I'm sure someone would be willing to lend some advice.

Hello again,

I am more interested in a target rig that will also see the P-Dog fields. I would probably be shooting heavy bullets, like 105's and up. I would say that 600 yard shooting would be my main distance for this gun, but a friend of mine just set up a 1000 yard range on his ground too. ;D

Thank you,

Matt

Shooting those distances with that heavy of a bullet the standard setup would be an 8 twist barrel that was about 26" to 31" long to help get the velocity up. I like the Savage Target Action with 26" straight taper on top of the Sharp Shooter heavy benchrest stock and topped off with a 12x42 Nightforce BR. Savage target action $520, Broughton Barrel $380, SharpShooter stock $299, Nightforce 12x42 BR $1300, little bitty groups priceless. ;D

Luky guy..

most of us dont have a 1000 yd range avail. ....help your buddy with the target frames and range const. and mtz. ...you definately want a bbl capable of using the 105 (103-108) class bullets....soo an 8" twist is the way to go(Keiger-Bartiline)...I dont know your budget and am not wanting to spend ur $$$ ...but dont skimp on anyting ...it will cost you more later....I wuld get a custom action (Kelbly-Bat)and Jewell trigger right off the bat....I use a conventional short range BR stock (McMillan-Kelbly-etc) so that I can shoot the gun at short range events (rules require drop at the heel of the stock) but no harm whatever you decide.....but I wuld build it under 17 lb so that it is a light gun (LG) in lonng range events and can also be shot as a heavy gun (HG)....scopes are evolving each yr...at first 25 was considered plenty ...now lots of folks are using as much as 60!! I have a 30-50 variable that I like...get good glass with repeatable adj (Leupold-NF-March are good uns.)....get a box of clay pigeons and start bustin em at 1000....you will never stop enjoying the shooting...Roger

If you have great somes of money, custom is probably the way to go. I was in your position a couple years ago and this is what I did. Does it make it right for you? Only you can answer that. I bought a Savage LRPV action and stock new for $725.00 and put a 1-8" twist PacNor barrel on it chambered in 6BR. Bought a go-guage from PG&T for $30 and was set to go. It shoots as well or better than I can and she has taught me lots. Some day I would like to go the custom route but to see if long range shooting is your cup of tea it is as cheap and accurate as one can get. Good luck with what ever your choice may be and I know you will love the 6BR and long range shooting. P.S. I see on one of the forums that a guy is selling an H.S, Precision stock (LRPV) for $225 and Northlander on the Savage Shooters forums has actions for les than $500. Add a custom barrel and you have a great starter rig. Just my 2 cents.

What do you guys think I could get into a rem700 actioned setup for? I am kind of a 700 fan at heart. However, a savage would be an interesting learning experience.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks

Check this out. I like Savages, but looking for custom rig

long40shot,
The gun of Josh's would be a good start. I just got a LRPV in 6BR 8tw. I have a 20 Tac barrel coming for it now. You can get custom barrel for $350.00 or less. The Remington would be build, but the barrels would cout more to fit.

The stock Savage gun that may fit your description best may be the Model 12 F Class. The question would be whether the 6BR or the 6.5x284 Norma would be the best choice for 1000 yards. Wind tends to be a significant issue at that distance.

I see that sam hall just set a record with the 6mm Dasher. Would that be a good choice for what I am wanting to do?

-Matt

i dont think you need a dasher. It doesnt sound like your all that experienced just yet. No offense please! Your not sure on what kind of rifle your wanting, so just stick with the basics for now. the 6br is an incredible chambering, and you will enjoy it very much. the extra 150fps you will gain with the dasher will most likely do you no good. The dasher is more for 600 yard shooting or for fellas that are really into there rifles. Buy a rem 700 have it cleaned up and put a good barrel on it and sit it in a mcmillan stock of your choice (the tooley MBR) would be my choice for you, unless your wanting to hunt while walking about, the a mcmillan hunter stock. I am not a savage fan, although they do have something to offer some folks. They just dont feel right to me, but thats me, and believe me i am a nobody. Go with the 6br and have fun, the rest is up to you! enjoy it! Lee

I agree with lee on the 6br over the dasher for first rifles. No fire forming and things like that. If you have the money, go custom. A custom action such as stiller or pirece actions might save you in the long run. Once you buy a factory gun, youll want to upgrade.

I won't argue with anyone that wants to deride the Savage rifles for lack of refinement. But my 2nd hand LRPV 6br with 12" twist bbl is a great shooter. I wacked a PD at 425 yards in heavy wind Saturday with it. Bbl hardly fouls at all.

The OP could do worse than a Savage if he's on a tight budget.

So... If you guys where to recommend a custom action to go with for a 6BR build, what might it be? I am starting to think starting with a custom would save me some money in the long run. Would a 700 clone be a good one, or should I be thinking about something else?

Thanks,

Matt Horn

I looked over this gun last week in Rapid City:
http://www.gunsamerica.com/929369354/Guns/Rifles/Dakota-Arms-Rifles/Dakota_Arms_Predator_6mm_BR.htm

It is very easy to invest more than the asking price into a custom and not end up with as refined and balanced a package. I've done it :(

Matt,

If you think that you are going to end up with a custom action any way. Go custom. Look for a used custom action gun, with as much thing as you can use. If you can keep the action, trigger, and stock, you will be up on the game. Get a nice PPC and open up the boltface and punch the barrel to 6BR, I have done this. Then you could add a 8tw 6BR or 6 Dasher. Remember, when you build a Remington ( It will be a very good gun) all cost will be the same. stock, barrel, trigger, etc. If you pay to have a action blueprinted, you are at the cost of a custom action. you may save $200 on the whole project, and still have a Remington. I have done this myself, but now do custom.
