Inletting a flat top....

I'm sure the guys that do this all day have jigs and fixtures and can do it a lot faster than I can.

I could have chambered 10 barrels in the time this will have taken.

I always wonder, why the huge estucheon? It hangs down so the gun cant sit on a table if its heavy in the rear and im always snagging my hand on them. I love a flush mounted socket head cap screw- oh so clean and oh so fast.

Just trying things. It'll always be on a bipod. I'm not worried about it. If it sucks, I can mill it out and do something else.

You get to cut it all out and do it over, for the same price you quoted. And no there are no jigs. Shims and swivel vices are the fastest way. Stocks are all different. McMillan has more than one mold for each pattern and wood is wood. You have to level and find center of each one.

I hate wood. I like metal, and I like concrete. Wood is for making things pretty. Metal and concrete are for making things that work, last, and have repeatable properties. Wood and carpentry always bothered me because its more "what looks right" than what "is right"

I'll enjoy the ever-loving-shit out of this rifle when it's done. But I'll stick to metal, fiberglass, and carbon fiber for guns I need to shoot cleans with.

The mark of a journeyman carpenter is when it is right and it looks right;)

Single trip across one of our big shapers..... that barrel channel would be hisTOEree.

Flip it channel down and hit both forearm sides.....

Then go to the biga$$ square bit mortising machine and..... maybe 30 seconds later, mag box.

Carry on

Good for you for doing this. Most guys just want the gravy. Now stock work is crude compared to barrel work. But so many "smiths" wont inlet a stock. I get calls every week to inlet and bed a stock because their smith wont. Never made any sense at all to me. He cant do a relatively crude job (working in .001"s) but you will trust him to do the chamber that we are working in .0001"s and contains an explosion next to your head. I get not "wanting" to do it though.

Lots of country between can't and won't... and, some do metal, some do wood ( fiberglass, cf, etc.)...

Yeah I get those calls too….makes me laugh but I only do them for full builds done here not for others with barreled actions.
