Not necessarily. If you have an FX-120 then its resolution is +/- .02 grains. If you accept the target weight of .00 and -.02 that actually gives you a spread of .06You can get +\- 0.01 pretty easily using the IP Trickler when controlled by either the AT V4 app or the IP Controller (box on left in pics). For example just reject the + 0.02 throws (dump a kernel from the IP cup, it’s fast), keeping the -0.02 and zero throws.
As for why upgrade to IP vs use AT V4, I think most folks like the IP trickler better, and the IP Controller is a plus IMO, a better algorithm and faster throw times. So quite a few folks are running a hybrid setup. And lots of other folks perfectly happy running straight AT V4. Both are outstanding.
