Informal Local League

The outdoor range I work PT at hosts a winter rifle league but has no input into it. This year there are 22 members and it lasts 10 weeks. We shoot at 100/200/300yd distances and each week is a different target. It is open to any center fire rifle and it must be scoped. All shooting is required to be done with a front Bipod and soft rear bag. Those are the only restrictions. Each week is a total of 20 shots. Only the very first week is shot as a group and after that the targets may be shot any time during range hours for that week..

Last Sunday was our first week and the target was a IBS Official 100yard Hunter Rifle. The kicker for week one is also that there will only be two 15min sessions. First session is unlimited foulers and 3 sighters. Second session starts with round robin firing, one each, at each of five sub targets. From there the rifle is cleared, made safe and then the shooter must get up, walk back and touch the rear wall. Then continue shooting 5 shot round robins until complete. Any unfired shots after the 15min are forfeited.

This first week I scored 169/200 with a 15 point penalty for an extra shot on a sub-target. Also on subs 3 and 4 I took errant hits from a neighbor shooter.

Hmmmm.....this is where?
McMiller Sports Center, Eagle Wis.. SW of Milwaukee.

First week top 5 shooters all shot 195/200 or better and the top 10 all shot 19/200 or better.

Week 2 we are shooting an IBS Official 200yd Hunter Target straight up and then week 3 is a IBS Official 300yd Hunter Target. Then the fun begins.. Bact to 100yds and this Target;

The top sub-target on the left is the first target and is a Cold Bore shot which must be shot before any sighters or foulers.

I like that target. Is it a commercial target or something you made up? Is the no score a sighter?

I believe it is a target that was designed by the league manager and then he had them printed.
Week 7/9/10 are also proprietary targets. Week 7 is brand new for this year.

If I’m reading correctly, after the first week a contestant can chose to shoot in different conditions than his competitors. Perhaps early morning with dead calm winds for one guy and blustery afternoon conditions for another.

Yes, exactly. Last few winters the range was open 5 days each week and we could shoot any day or hours the range was open. So yes one could wait for favorable weather conditions. Part of the idea behind the league was informal fun competition. Where all could attend at their leisure and not confined to commit to just one day and time.. Though this year they are only open Fri., Sat., Sun., due to they were supposed to start new construction Dec. 1 so that is keeping everyone on a more even playing field. This will be the leagues ninth consecutive year and it is growing.

So this weekends weather prediction for you to take your pick;
Friday, Snow, 5"-8". 32*, winds from the E-NE at 18mph so mostly a head wind.
Sat., Cloudy, 21*, winds N-NW at 17-19mph, winds left to right.
Sun., Mostly Cloudy, 0*, winds W at 13mph, winds quartering left to right down range.

This really is a great time with a lot of fun people.
There are also 2 women and two young teens shooting with us. Last year both the women finished in the top 5! :)
