In need of Vanier Calipers that are not China made

My Starrett and mitutoyo must have been knockoffs. 3 sets were crap in the last 2 years. Went to using my backup digital dinosaur set. Works just fine.

I'll just tell the item I'm measuring that I'm using an analog tool......

I started with a Mitutoyo and it would "jump" time occasionally and was a royal PITA to reset....I ditched it and bought a Starrett and have been happy ever since. The gear teeth on the Mitutoyo were very small compared to the Starrett....I have never had a problem at all with the Starrett......the extra money is well worth it in my opinion and the dial is easier to read too.

most people on here are referring to dial calipers, I think. Vernier calipers are supposed to measure to 1/1000. there is some skill required in using these.

speaking of vernier calipers. I looked online. some of the higher end models are super expensive. I suppose a higher end vernier caliper can be pretty darn accurate!

Wife's grandfather handed down his measuring tools. He sharpened saw blades for the piano factory in South Haven way back. Mostly Starret stuff but a nice Mitutoyo digital 0-1 micrometer and digital caliper. A nephew has them now. He also had the first left and right hand hammers I'd ever seen. Used for tensioning large rotary saw blades on a specially made anvil. They rebounded in a specific direction based on which side of the blade he was working on.

Several years ago, I purchased a dial vernier caliper from Amazon, Anytime Tool, based on the reviews. It was about $40 or so. I reasoned my downside risk was low.

I was pleasantly surprised. It has held zero and is within the advertised accuracy range of + or - .001" every time I have checked with length standards.

I liked it so much that I purchased another one to permanently mount my Whidden Bump Gauge on. Same excellent performance to date.

So, I would not necessarily rule out a caliper made in China. Sometimes an economy tool works very well.
