jonbearman, I agree with some of what you say about management. After working for a stint in large corporate america I cam to believe that CEOs should get there bonuses for growth and profits that are acheived 5 years after they are gone, not just for the last year's performance. The profits of a company can be increased in a variety of ways that may not help the company prosper in the long run. For example selling off a division may make the numbers look really good this year but may hurt them downline, the same can be said for R&D spending. Many corporations are eating their seed corn by not investing today in R&D that can help improve current and provide for new products in the out years.
A CEO who says they do not want to be held responsible for the growth that they should have fostered should be shown the door. Wouldn't it make sense to hire people that want to build something other than just their own retirement package.
