IMR4350 in 6.5x47 Lapua?

Hey fella's,

I've got a 6.5x47 Lapua that should be done here in about a month and have been searching everywhere for H4350, I found one pound and that is it in the last 7 months of looking. But, I've got an 8lb keg of IMR4350. Has anyone tried IMR4350 in the 6.5x47 and did it perform well? How were velocities an accuracy compared to H4350? I'm going to give it a try if I can't get my hands on more H4350.

Thanks in advance.

I have had 3 / 6.5 x 47's and have never tried IMR 4350. However, there are 3 things to look at. 1.) It has kernels that are nearly twice the size of H4350, so your load density will not be near as great; 2.) It is a "shade" faster burning; and 3.) It is NOT an extreme powder. Now, having said all that, there should be no reason why it would not work. Now, how well it works may be another game altogether. BUT if that is all the powder you can get your hands on, give it a shot. If you happen to have RL-15, VV N540 / N550, Varget, you are in business. I believe that if you use the VVN540, RL-15 and Varget, keep your bullet weights to 123-130. VV N550 can handle ALL bullet weights very well. But as I stated, I have never tried the IMR version of 4350 in the 6.5 X 47...

Thanks for the info. I do have several kegs of Varget and a keg of RL-15. I would like to shoot the 140 Berger Hybrid, but, I do have a few hundred 130 VLD's I can shoot up.

Well you know the old adage, start low and work up from there. Try taking the VLD's and sticking them 10K INTO the lands and start with RL-15. I would start with 36.0grs and work toward 38.0grs. Use CCI 450's with the RL-15. My "guess" somewhere between 37.4 and 38.0 you will start drilling tiny little dots! Please, let me know on a PM how you did...

Have been shooting the 140gr Hybrids with 37.2gr of RE15 and am quite pleased with the load. Groups in the X-ring when I do my part (which I do occasionally). In my rifle it is shooting better than the 130gr VLDs at 600yd. This was with virgin brass and Rem 7 1/2 primers. Will be trying the same with prepped cases in a couple of weeks. Am really pleased with the 6.5x47L round.

Thanks for the info guys! I'll keep you posted.

AR, what kind of velocities are you getting with the 140's and what barrel length do you have? Thanks!

I have a 6.5x47 I tried imr4350 and with the same charge it left my barrel filthy it didn't burn it all and powdered up my Vais break bad so went back to H4350 and no problems shoots 1/4 moa out 600 good good powder in this Texas heat

Yes to the IMR 4350. Velocities were similar. It is extremely accurate. I also had good luck with IMR 4007SSC. start around 39.0 grains and go up to 41. Something in there will work.
