IMR 8208 XBR Powder

Has anyone tried this powder with the .284 Win. to just see what it will do? I have some and was thinking of trying it with 162-168 grain bullets. Does anyone think this is a waste of my time?

Howdy !

IMHO: I think 8028 would/will prove too fat in burn rate, to make a great choice in .284

I have used IMR 8208 XBR Powder in my Remington 700 VSF .308 and it gave me my best 100 yard 5 shot group ever with winchester cases, winchester primers, 168 gr SMK bullets and 41.5 grains of 8208. The group measured .212"x .232". Average velocity was 2603.5 Ft/sec. Standard deviation was 5. That group included the cold bore shot and I shot that group using Harris bipod and a leather Rabbit Ear sandbag for rear stock support.

I also tried IMR 8208 XBR Powder in my Remington 700 VSF .22-250 with 55 grain and 60 grain bullets. Results were nothing to write home about.

This thread sounds a lot like the ones when 8208XBR came out a while back... "What would be a good load with 8208 in a 6br/brx/dasher with 105s?" "8208's too fast. Bad choice." "I did it anyway, and it worked great."

I've been pleasantly surprised at all the cartridges in which 8208 has worked (very) well for me. However, I'd think the 284 with medium-heavy bullets is probably beyond its surprisingly large envelope. But you never know, and if you have the time to waste and use due care with the fast powder, I'm not going to stop try to stop you.

So, yes, I think you're wasting your time. But I've been wrong before... :)
