IMR 8208 XBR in QuickLOAD

I learned that the closest canister powder to 8208 XBR is ADI AR 2206H. It is not an exact match but is close. I made a copy of my "qloadfw.pro" file to "custom.pro", opened "custom.pro" in Notepad, copied the line for 2206H down to the IMR section, changed "ADI AR 2206H" to "IMR 8208 XBR" and saved it. Then, from QuickLOAD, I clicked on the "File:qload" line in the upper right of the "Charge" window and selected "custom.pro".

Now, the interesting part is that QuickLOAD sorts first by manufacturer, then by burning rate. QuickLOAD put 8208 between IMR 4198 and 3031. It also appears to pack about 3.3% denser than H4895 or Varget. I verified this by filling a .308 case to the mouth with the three powders and weighing on my Acculab VIC 123.

I certainly do not promote this as definitive but I wanted an easy way to work through some 8208 load candidates. I recommend more caution than usual and working up from a lower percentage than you would normally. This is only a stopgap measure until QuickLOAD produces an update with validated data for 8208. Please be careful.

In layman terms what is a good starting point with the new powder? I just picked up 2lb of it this evening. 27.0gr???? Thanks Lee

I would say it is a little fast for 6.5X47. A max load is only about 90% density. If you want to try it, a starting load of 33.0 with the 123 Scenar should be Ok.

For anyone that does not want to screw around with QuickLOAD files, simply selecting ADI AR 2206H will work fine. Again, be more cautious than usual.
