IMR 8208 XBR in 6mmBR

I have been testing this new lady and have found a load that shoots VERY ell in my gun.

Lapua cases
Berger 105 gr BT
Wolf Small Rifle Mag primers
29.0 gr IMR 8208 XBR

Velocities have averaged 2953 with a ES of 7 fps.

Today was the second test and the first with my chronograph.

Results have been groups at 100 yards all at or under .3 for 5 shot groups with 2 groups in the low .2's. This is a F-Class Remington 700 with a 30" Krieger 1:8 barrel with 1500 rounds and a Weaver T-36 scope shot off a Sinclair front rest and Protektor rear bag, a McMillan EDGE stock, and ME shooting. Winds have been in the 3-5 mph range and using one flag at the target. Temperature has been 55 degrees and 50 degrees.

My control groups were shot with 30.3 gr of VARGET and Berger 105 VLD's with the same cases and primers. Velocities for this load were almost identical with the new 8208 and accuracy was about .2" worse.

Thanks for the information. I just received some 8208, and have
loaded a few rounds in the Berger 105 bts. I had a hard time deciding where to start. I started @ 27grains which may be to low but, better safe than sorry. I usually shoot 28 grains of H4895 for the Berger 105, which isnt very hot but it gives me good accuracy out of my 6mm br. I have not had a chance to shoot them yet.

George,

What kind of temperature sensitivity have you experienced with 8208, compared to say varget or R-15? Your stated velocity is about what I am getting with 31.5 gr of R-15 at around 55-60 degrees (es-8), with similar accuracy. I have not yet tested my loads in a wide temperature range. Bill

Lapua
Wolf mag
Berger 105 (HBN coated) jammed .015"
30.5 gns 8208XBR
26" Shilen 8 twist

Node picked out of an Audette ladder.
Did'nt save the data from the subsequent five shot groups but 30.5 was the winner.
Velocity for 30.5 in the Audette was 2949fps.

Same velocity as you I quess. Just need more powder to get there due to the HBN and shorter barrel.
Never got around to a seating depth test. I think its close. Very small cloverleafs at 200 with some inexplicable flyers. Hopefully the flyers can be corrected with a tweak of the bullet up or down. Or small tweaks to the charge or electric charges administered to the trigger nut :-\

Be interested to know your relations to the lands?

Where is everyone finding the 8208xbr? I have tried a number of places...either sold out or haven't been able to get it yet.

Got mine from Powder Valley during its release. Best bet would just be get in line and wait. Hopefully they make more.

I got mine a week or so ago from PVI. I was on the pre-paid waiting list since Jan 17th. I actually missed the first go round.

So far my testing has all been in the 45-55 degree temperature range and no variation in velocities noted.

This Friday, the wind gods permitting, I will be testing again, this time with temperatures in the 65-70 degree range and out to 600 yards.

I'll let you know what happens. My old favorite load of 30.2 grains of Varget has shot as well as 1 3/8" 5 shot groups at 600 yards, but normally will keep them in the X-ring.

Any loads of 29.2 or above in my good showed pressure signs in the form of ejector marks.

FYI, I ordered my powder from Powder Valley and had to wait about 2 months for the order to be filled. Powder Valley is THE place to order from in my book.

Hopeful,

George
