IMR 4198?

Anybody use this powder. For some reason my Father in Law has 2lbs of this powder and has given it to me. I shoot 22 & 6 Dasher, 22x47L, 7saum and 6.5mm cartridges. Any info would be appreciated

Joe S.

It could work in the 22 dasher with 40 / 45 gr bullets. But that's about it.
I personally would not try such light bullets in fast twist tubes.

Accuracy loads with 4198 back in the 1970's for the .222;

Is what I load cast 55's in .223 bolt guns these days. Somewhere around 19g,bullet seated well into the lands. Keep runout to bare minimum,play with neck tension and due diligence to overall case/chamber neck clearances when choosing bullet size. I'm usually around .2265 on finished bullet O.D. Keep lube to the absolute minimum,just a tiny bit above GC.... no more. In a 12T,you're looking for a node @2600 -2700.

Go to powder in fireball size cases. IMR seems to be slightly hotter than H. H meters better in my powder measures.

Yeah . . . according to what I see in the QuickLoad app, IMR 4198 produces a little more pressure and velocity than H-4198. Also, IMR 4198 takes up more case volume than H-4198, which suggest to me why it might tend to meter better.

I have a friend that uses 71 grains h4198 under a 350 grain bullet in a smokeless powder 45 caliber muzzle loader. Recoil is stout lol.

A long drop tube will allow one to get more IMR's long kernels in a small case. H4198's kernels are shorter.
I use a 14” just to get enough H in there. You cant get any more powder in a 30br than i can and the imr is still not enough. Its the reason people use hodgdon in em

Best suited to smaller cartridges like the 222REM, the 223REM plus the bigger straight walled cartridges like the 444MARLIN and the 45/70GOVT. You have found no data for the cartridges you mentioned because IMR4198 is NOT well suited to any of them. So, you got two pounds of it, huh...sounds like a great excuse to buy a new 45/70 rifle to me.
