Imr 4198 for 6.5 creedmoor?

Either IMR4198 or H4198 their is a very real risk that you could double charge a load. If for no other reason, that alone is reason enough for me to say no way in my book would I encourage another to play with that one. I have been known po play with some un tested stuff or risky behavior. That is one I would shy away from.

Old post warning- I get better accuracy with this reduced load, then full pressure loads with IMR 4350. Maybe less barrel wip?

Basically I'm trying to find a powder that I can use in these times when some select powders are virtually non existent
Jerry,
I agree with others 4198 in most cases is much to fast for the creedmoor you could develop a reduced load for it I’m sure but who wants that?… what I will say it’s not as sought after as H4198 but there’s a lot of 45/70 shooters that would gladly buy or trade with you so if I were you I would buy it up anyway. I believe Jackie Schmidt is using it in his ppc or 30br with some success so definitely some trading stock

Why take the chance! No such thing as a good explosion! With fill levels below 50 % there is a good chance of having detonation. Personally I would not go there.

Paul
Detonation is a phenomenon of very slow powders primarily. Far less likely with faster powders. Common revolver loads are well under 50% case fill. But those same cases will often state “do not reduce” with some powders specifically because they are slow for the application and already at minimum case fill.

For example, Alliant says do not reduce 38spl below 6.1gr of power pistol. But you can reduce 4.1gr of Sport Pistol and 5.4 of BE-86.

It’s clearly not case fill that determines stability, it’s the powder that determines how sensitive it is to case fill.

I’ve tested reduced .223 with Sport Pistol down to 4.5gr, perfect performance.

If low case fills per se were always hazardous, every 22lr would detonate.

Hey guys, with powder being as hard to find as it is, I came across some imr 4198 the other day. Looked into it and people load 22-250 and other smaller cartridges with it. I'm about to start reloading for my 6.5 cm and was wondering if anyone has any experience loading this particular powder into this cartridge. Thanks in advance
You certainly can use imr4198 in 6.5 CM, but it will be low velocity plinking load.
140 gr bullet 16.0 gr = 1664 fps
140 gr bullet 22.0 gr = 2087 fps
It might be somewhat accurate...
It's much better in the 223 with light bullets, and there should be data for that.
And too fast of a powder for the 22-250...unless you are interested in 55 gr bullets at 2200 to 2900 fps, compared to 3600 or 3700 fps for many more suitable powders.
