IMR-4198 --- H-4198 ,30BR)

Well crap.. I went to pick up some 4198 to begin my 30br loadings.. I guess I just saw the numbers 4198 on the shelf and grabed it.. I had H-4198 written on my list, and always like H powders.. Well I just noticed that I grabed IMR instead..
The chart on the Hogdons site lists IMR right next to their H-4198.. So my obvious question now is, What difference will it make to substitute the two? Has anyone used the IMR-4198 in the 30br??

Kelly

Take it back if you can... the "H" version has shorter grains and is easier to fill the case with.

If you can't then use it - the burning rates are almost the same... just work up the load as you would normally would.

If it's the new Aussie IMR-4198, then it's supposed to be the same stuff as H-4198. For whatever reason, it seems that Hodgdon dropped the IMR-4198 and then started selling H-4198 under the IMR label.

If not, then what Catshooter said applies.

Burn rate charts show the two brands with identical rates of burn.

They are not identical, but I forgot which is faster.

It probably would be a good idea to call Hodgdon and ask... always have the can with the lot number available when calling about powder.

I went to trade it and they had no H-4198.. "CRAP"... Brought it back home and gently, slipped and taped 34 grains into the case and it came to about a quarter inch below the top of the neck.. Figured I could still compress it, but it didn't happen. It wouldn't hold my seating depth..

Going back to town today...

Robinette reamer with zero freebore.. I don't know about the leade angle.. I was going to have to jump the bullets to have them seated down by the neck junction. So, would you suggest giving up "ALOT" of seating depth to alow for a jam??

Also. I saw a load on the 30br info page that used Benchmark powder. Have you ever tried that, or just stayed with the 4198.. I haven't tried anything yet, but I'm gonna in a couple of hours.. I was just wondering.. I have Benchmark here at home..

Yea. I started seating them longer than the junction area. I've got some loaded with Benchmark powder now. 34-35 grains. It's still a little compressed. The bullets are just some Nos. Bal. Tips 125gr. They are actually a boattail. I've got them out and touching the lands.
I'm use to loading the light 6br bullets, and 1/4" into the neck was no big deal.. With these longer bullets going into the same necks though, it just looks like run out would be alot less if it was seated deeper. I do not have a consintricity gauge, and I'm using Wilson dies. I can't discern any runout.,VISUALLY)

I guess it's just that a 65gr bullet seated 1/4" into the neck "LOOKS" alot more stable than a 125gr bullet seated 1/4" deep.. Oh well. I'll get used to it.

Gonna make it go "BANG" tommorrow..

Burn rate depends on case capacity and bore diameter among other things.

You may find this chart I made for my 20 Vartarg informative:

You can see that IMR4198 is a touch faster than H4198 for me. It gave excellent accuracy and has not been sensitive to temperature. WAY closer to H4198 than to AA2200, which is perhaps the most temperature sensitive powder I've ever worked with. IMR 4198 does have long kernels that don't fill a case as densely, but if the burn rate and fill you achieve are ok, as it is in my 20 Vartarg, then it's not a problem. It meters well in my chargemaster, but cuts kernels in my powder throw.

Back when the 30BR first came out I got a barrel and preceded to develope a load whith some IMR 4198 that I had an 8 lb can of. I was not getting the results I was looking for so I spoke to some shooters who were winning with the 30. They both said get H4198. I did, immediate success. My advice, get H4198. I also have the original style Robinette no free bore reamer. You will find it likes the shorter jacket 8 ogive bullets as opposed to the longer jacket 10 ogive. On so decent day I have won 500 yd matches full of shooters using the 6mm flavor of the year. Have fun, great cartridge, easy to tune.
