Impossible task. Scope for 100 to 1000 yds

I am looking for something that does not exist. When hunting, the majority of my shooting is done between 100-200 yds closer to 100. I do have one place where I can go to 700 yds. I recently found a great deal on a 300 win mag. After shooting, I was pleased to get 200 yd groups around or under 1/2". It didn't take long for me to become obsessed with long shooting. Mainly to test my abilities, I would like to try my hand at F class. So now I am looking for a scope mainly for hunting to try F class. Due to price, I was leaning toward Sightron SIII 6-24x50. Then I started thinking Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50. I then found a pretty good deal on a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50 with zero stop. The 3.5-15x50 is more suited to the short hunting but seems overkill for 100 yds to me especially since 15x at 1000 would be not ideal.

After using my Weaver T36 at 50 yard and 100 yard targets, I find my Sightron 6-24 a little anemic ;-)

Depending on what you are hunting, 6 power is ok at closer ranges. I used a fixed 6 power for several years on one of my rifles.

You will definitely want more power at the longer ranges. You might consider two scopes; one for hunting and one for target shooting. Re-zeroing will be not as difficult as you might imagine if you use good mounts and good bases.

GunAddict,

I like 8 x 32 to 12 x 42 power for long range. I would go a little higher than 24x you can always turn it down but you can't turn it up if it not there.

I guess I already knew that I would need more magnification for 1000 just didn't want to admit it. Let's take it back a bit. What are usable magnifications for 300-600 yd F class? If I start with this range I can test my abilities without the cost jumping completely out of sight.

You're over-thinking this. There are plenty of Palma shooters who would smoke you like a cheap bong with their iron sights vs. your F-class rig and scope -- whatever scope you use. Why? Because they REALLY know how to shoot, and magnification is probably the least important factor in the whole equation. What you need is scope that is good enough to see the target, and more importantly is absolutely reliable and repeatable. If you make adjustments, you must be able to count on the scope to move point of impact accordingly.

A 10-60x scope isn't going to make you a better shooter. Practice, and understanding wind and other conditions and sighting adjustments, and a dozen other things are more important than deciding between 10x and 36x. 8)

Buy the 6-24 or 8-32 Sightron SIII, and I think you'll be off to a very good start.

Unfortunately, I tend to over-think most everything. That is why I have tried to read everything on long range shooting instead of just getting out there and practicing. I guess part of it is I am realizing how expensive long range shooting and competition shooting really is. In an effort to lessen the learning curve, I study and analyze to the point of extreme. You are probably right, the SIII in 6-214x50 will be a good start.
