I'm new, but interested...

I've just recently become exposed to the world of long-range shooting sports, and am REALLY interested in becoming active in it. For about 6 months now, I have owned a Remington Model 700 in a .308 Win. w/ a Leupold 3-9x 33mm Compact scope. I know that this basic rifle probably won't get me to the top of th competition, but that's not what I'm looking to do. I was just wondering what I could do,rifle modifications, hand loads, scopes, etc.) to give me a little more acuraccy and consitency down range...prefferably 300yds+... If anybody wants to share some secrets let me know on here or email me at codyjoetsu@hotmail.com thanks

I would say to start with is get a higher power scope, bed your rifle and shoot shoot shoot. Nothing helps with good groups than shooting and practicing.

I second what Stuball said but try and get connected with someone at your local range that has some experience shooting at the farther ranges. Let them help you avoid some of the more common mistakes.

It is way too easy to get frustrated with long range shooting if you don't have someone helping and coaching.

Cody I see from your e-mail adress that you are associated with Tarleton. I have a daughter that is a Junior there. Beautiful part of Texas with some great hunting nearby.

Good Luck!

Hunt Texas, Tarleton has a great rifle team. I live in Plano and shoot at Ft. Wolters in Mineral Wells www.fwssc.org You MUST come out and see what we do. It is the PERFECT place to learn how to shoot long range. Just a bunch of guys who like to shoot 300-1000yds, with the .308 by the way!! There are not many matches in the summer but check out the 07 match schedule on the website but be warned it is VERY addictive!!!

What model 700 do you have ADL, BDL, CDL, Varmint, PSS,tactical)? Like me, most of the guys I shoot with start with a Rem. 700 heavy barrel, get a GOOD scope Black Hills ammo and get after it. WHEN the bug bites you will want another rifle, scope, reloading stuff, and the list goes on. Its also like buying a stereo system, get the best you can afford, maybe more)put the money in a high end scope, like you would speakers.

Keep researching these foroms. There is a TON of knowledge to be shared here. Go to Snpers Hide. There are alot more active forum members there. As you learn more you will see what I'm talking about. Come out to Ft. Wolters or check out www.tacproshootingcenter.com near Stephenville. You are lucky, I have to drive 2hrs+. Great guys at Tac-Pro too, Tell Alice and Michelle, Buzz sent you.

I'm having a new rifle built, second one, see what I told you!!) I love this forum because it is a little bit more precision oriented.
If you have any questions PM me.
