Ignorance of the Press

I have noted that the TV stations in my area are showing a photo of the knife used by the attacker of the three policemen in the run-up to the NYC Times Square New Year's celebration, and calling it a "machete". Whether it is the actual knife (that is what they seem to be implying) or a stock photo, it appears that they know even less about knives than about firearms. At about age 12 (decades ago), when I first encountered one, hanging on the wall of a friends house, his father (who bought it from a Gurhka guard at an American airbase in India at which he served in WW II), told me that it was a Gurhka Knife. A few years later I found out that the Gurhkas carried them as their primary mode of close quarters combat, and that they were very lethal with them, and what we in the U.S. called a Gurhka Knife back then was properly named a Kukri by the Gurhkas (who are native to Nepal).

That somewhat lengthy tale shows that the press cannot tell a Gurhka Knife, or, more accurately, a Kukri, from a machete. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

I have often read/heard that Gurhkas are some bad ass dudes.

And yes, the MSM is just plain ignorant. But their worst crime IMHO is their tendency/desire to treat the average US citizen like they're a bunch of running dummies.

Dudes? Not sure I would say that word to them.
They spend their youth striving to serve in their regiment in the British army. Selection is severe and treasured. Their retirement and benefits are pitiful. Entirely different system for them.
I was told they were more feared than the ROK Marines. Having been with the ROK’s I find that statement terrifying.

Turns out we are all ignorant of many things that others are expert at.

For example, many years ago a reporter was doing an article on integrated circuits and was interviewing people at my company. The reporter insisted on saying 'silicone' [i.e., the rubbery stuff like silicone sealant] for the material we used which was silicon [pronounced sili ken]. You should have seen the look of disgust on her face when I tried to give her the correct pronounciation!

I think the media doesn't care because no one - except for a few - know the difference. And, for the vast, vast majority of media, it's about viewership and ratings.

You must remember the news media and press are controlled by the present day governments. They can not tell the truth anymore than the politicians can. They just boot step along and spread the same falsehoods about most every weapon used to attack, injure or murder.
So not surprising that NY can not call the weapon by it's proper name or make.

Let it slide.
Colion Noir gets a pass after talking about "bullets going off" in a recent video, so now we must give everyone a pass including Joe Biden who really doesn't know any better.
Mr. Noir DOES know better and many of the people in the thread below do not care.

This has been since day one.
During the American Revolution, prior to photos, artists drew the events. Very important back then as illiteracy was high and the rendition of an event was extremely important.
Boston massacre. Two well known drawings each for a different paper. The obvious differences are one thing but the subtle subconscious differences show how even back then they were screwing with your mind.
The real beauty is when done properly, you have no idea you’re being screwed.
Shit, the news convinced the entire USA that the TET offensive was a huge defeat for us. Reality, a massive victory that caused HoChiMinh to fire his highest and most trusted general. Oh….you didn’t know that? That prick Harry Reasoner crawled into your mind and you never knew it. One of many masters of the game.

Watched Fox and Friends this morning.. Hadn't watch TV since last year..haha.. Fox referred to the "weapon" as a machete.
