If You Have Access, Please Someone Post The Berger SWN Scores Here.

I thought about that before leaving home. Brought a decent camera and laptop only to find that I left the card reader at home. Hope you don't mind iPhone pics.

Today's wind clinic was quite an event. I must remind readers that this is my first trip to Ben Avery, and I am amazed by the hospitality that I have received. This is going to be one awesome match. I hope everyone can come out next year. It was anounced that the lang-range matches were extended to 4 relays to accomodate more shooters. The latest estimate is that 340 will be shooting Friday-Sunday.

A very nice lunch was provided. I also must mention that there were drinks (bottled water) available on the range courtesy of Berger.

The day started with the flag-raising ceremony. Properly done I might add. After that came Bryan Litz's talk about external ballistics. It didn't take long for Bryan to turn the lecture over into a Q&A session. If you have read Bryan's books and posts in the ballistics forum, there wasn't a lot discussed outside of that information. It was really informative for the newer shooters present.

Several world class shooters had smaller classes, depending on discipline, on position setup, wind reading, tactics, and sighter management.

The next event was wind-reading by Mid Tompkins (sp?). He demonstrated reading the mirage effectively in a fishtail situation. I didn't see who was doing the shooting (F/TR), but Mid's wind calls were right on. He also described in a quite detailed way how to use the flags and the mirage for a complete and combined picture of the wind.

Last came the live-fire event. All shooting was done from 1k. First, 5 sighters. Next was 10 shots on a center-hold at Mid's call. The idea was to correlate the drift observed with the mirage and flags. The last part was a 10 shot pair-fired relay. Mid gave specific instructions to give poor pit service (20 seconds) with the intent of forcing the shooter to make an absolute wind call for each shot.

The wind did the rest. The first several relays had the fishtail and a pretty consistent wind pattern. At the end of the day, the winds picked up from the west showing us anywhere from near full-value @ 10-12 mph to a 1/4 value tailwind.

I shot my Dasher for the day due to a lack of prepped brass for my LR rifle. I would have to say that I have a lot to learn about reading the wind. During the pair-fire, my wind adjustments went from 1.5 min left to 4.5 min left. Both adjustments resulted in X's so, I couldn't have been too far off.

I now have a new tool in my toolbox. When I get home, I'm going to have to try to use it more. Personally, I've shot like LBart and Habu for so long, with such success, that I never developed the absolute wind reading skills needed.

The good news is that the tune of my Dasher is outstanding! I also got a chance to finish my bullet pointing experiment during the fire-on-call. I now know where I should be spending my time.

Temp will be in the low 80's with mild 0 to 5 max winds. Should be a record breaking weekend!!!

May want to look at tomorrow in the wind forecast. Weather man said gusting 40 tomorrow on the 10:00 am weather today.

Looks like a great turnout and should be a fun weekend.
