If I have a 243 Winchester do I need a 223 Remington

Sanity check.
My goal is really to have a lever rifle in all the calibers I shoot.
I have a Finnwolf in 243, most accurate rifle I own.

I have Reminton 700 ADL in 223rem accurate if you can get past the 10 pound trigger.

I have shot them both at the 600 yd range and they preformed beyond my skills.

Had a Brain Fart yesterday looking at a box of 58g V-Max 6mm a friend gave me.
58g is only 3 grains more than the 55g 224. Mmmmmm. And the 243 also shoots heavier bullets....
Why do I need the 223, I've thought about the Long Ranger but now...why.

Varminter to Speed Goats in a nice lever rifle.
Personally I'd shoot the 55-58 grain .244 bullets. If they shoot well, you've answered your own question. My guess is, they won't shoot them nearly as well as the 80+ grain bullets. As far as the 10lb trigger...easy fix. TriggerTech triggers are on this forum classifieds all the time for 160-180.00 often. Bite the bullet and get a great reasonably priced trigger.

I cost way more to load for a 243 than a 223. The range is littered with 223 brass free for the picking up, 243 not so much. Much less powder is needed to make 223s.
Yes.

265 rounds of 223 per pound of powder when loading for 55 grain.

Only 152 rounds per pound when loading for 243.

I would not be without a 243, but with the current component situation it is in the back of the safe and the bolt action 223 is on vermin reduction duty.

Oleveration,
I'd say keep the 223! Why, because its a gun you dont have to buy. I'm not saying its better or worse then the 243, but its a gun you own. It is cheaper to make it better then to sell it and buy something else to have to make better. It does not eat anything because its already paid for. If you are a lever guy that is worried about a bad trigger, then you replace it. Its way cheaper then buying a new gun.

You have it reversed. Thw question is if he HAS a 243 should he consider getting a 223

More guns are better than less and the Long Ranger is a super nice rig. I have one in .223 simply because I didn't own a .223 at the time. I have been more than impressed with it. Very accurate and very comfortable to shoot. Off a bench it will put three 53 grain Vmaxs in one hole with CFE 223. I have though about buying another Long Ranger in .243 and 6.5 Creed just because they are cool.

The Op writes he has a Finnwolf in 243 and a 700 in 223 with a “ten pound” trigger.

You can replace the Remington trigger with any of several choices. However an old school Rem 700 trigger is a great work in progress. (Old school is 2004 or before).

The old series of trigger gets oiled repeatedly and that gathers dirt and dries out and stiffened up.. It needs degreased but there are a full set of adjustments. Look the process up on the net. Follow carefully and proceed with caution.

My early 700 BDL went from ok to excellent in about 30 minutes of work. It now breaks clean like breaking glass at 2.75#. My 2004 SS BDL did not clean up quite as nice and would benefit from a trip to a gunsmith that knows his “700’s”.

Both the 234 and 223 are great in their own right.
