Musgrave story. A couple of years ago, I aquired a rifle, believed to be a Musgrave from a friends estate, along with several other guns. It was in 25-06, had a heavyish barrel - well used, an interesting composite stock and reasonable trigger. I had known the rifle for several years, having been varmint/goat shooting with him on many occasions.
I really had no need for it in 25 cal cal so looked at getting it re barrelled. On taking it out of the stock - it had no branding, no serial number ( we didnt have registration back 3 years ago), in fact no identifying marks at all - except for Timney's name on the trigger.
I identified it as a Musgrave Model 80 - a hybrid between Mauser and Winchester. The trigger was from a Mod 70 - and a long action Mod 70 Picatinny rail fitted perfectly..
I took it to True Flite to get a 308 Ultramatch 28 inch fitted. The guys recognised the rifle immediately. Apparently, the South Africa rifle team had these guns sponsored by Musgrave in the 1980's for a match in NZ - and they ran out of cash and sold them to an NZ dealer/gunsmith. Another story is that they could not re-import them to SA. They were built for the team - taken from the production, before branding was added - or the branding was on the original barrel, rather than the action (more likely). The stock is interesting as it is fibreglass over wood - and very well made. Pillar bedded, but no adjustment for LOP or cheek rest.
I'm not sure what class of rifle. There's no obvious sight mount or tapped holes on the side for Central or similar, so they may have been mounted to the top of the action or for that matter a location for a sling- so maybe an "early" FTR? It's quite nice to shoot - for fun anyway - maybe a beginners FTR? For now it can stay in the safe.
