IBS sanctioned Benchrest School

IBS Benchrest School

The 2008 International Benchrest Shooters School is a reality. Parts are falling into place. It will be held on the weekend of June 20-21-22, 2008 at the Tawas Range of Iosco Sportsman's Club in East Tawas, Michigan. The schooling begins at 6:00 PM on Friday and continues until the last shot of the IBS sanctioned 100 yard score aggregate is fired on Sunday afternoon. There will be fun, instruction, and merchandise prizes. This school is intended for the beginner and intermediate shooter. At this point you can contact me for further details. I'll soon have the registration forms ready but that is yet to come. As the Tawas area is a vacationers' mecca, you will need to make motel reservations in advance. I'll post the nearby motels soon. There is limited camping space available at the range with limited electricity and water available. There is no pump out facility there, however. There are a couple bathrooms but no showers in the clubhouse. There is a kitchen inside and a barbeque pit outside where we will cook our steaks on Saturday evening.

With this school we plan on pairing students with instructors. But The beginning of the school will be taught with everyone together. By doing this, we will be able to give eveyone the same Safety Briefing, the same History of BR briefing, the same Bench Etiquette briefing, and the listing of times and schedule for the school. After that is taken care of the instructors will break off to go teach their students. From there, each instructor can key on things they feel most important with their students. The rest of Saturday is for instruction, Sunday is the match. Students and Instructors will shoot. There will be Awards, Trophies and a Merchandise Draw as well. The school will cover briefly Long Range BR,,600 and 1000) yards, and also Short Range Group shooting,100 to 300), but it will Key on IBS Score shooting, both Hunter and VFS style. This school is a Non Profit school for us,Francis and Paul). We Volunteered to do this, like we have for the past few years for the Postal Matches. Any profits from this school will be split by the IBS and The Iosco Sportsmen's Club.

The pupils' registration forms and the merchandise prizes are beginning to come in. This looks to be a very fine school in the making. The merchandise will be awarded merely by your attendance. You do not need to be the top gun to get the grand prizes. Of course, being the winner of the match is a feather in one's cap. Those whose wife, family, or significant other plans to travel to Tawas but not attend the school will be happy to know there is shopping and beaching available. There is Tawas Point State Park 2.5 miles from the range. If she wishes to dine on a fine steak dinner at the range Saturday evening, she can do so for a a mere $10.00 per additional person. The steaks will be cooked exactly the way the diner wants it because guess who will be doing the grilling. The grill is an excellent place to continue the friendships that you've made during the day. Now name another fine restaurant where you can get a steak dinner and meet the cook for that price. We are trying to encourage more people to get into benchrest shooting. That is the main driving force behind this school. Everyone says we need new shooters; We're trying folks.

For anyone thinking about formal BR competition, I can't think of a better thing to do than attend this school. Paul and Francis Becigneul have put together a unique learning opportunity that will help the participant understand and enjoy this demanding sport. Both of these fine individuals know what it takes to win in competition while still keeping the 'fun quotient' high. I've had the pleasure of meeting and competing with both of these guys...class acts all the way.

The list of names that have committed to instruct students and the vendors that have donated their products and services are impressive, as well. These are people that know how to play the game and can shorten the learning curve tremendously. A savvy student could easily save several times more than the tuition fee simply by learning what not to waste his/her money on.

I give this one 5 stars! :thumb: -Al

Thank you, Al. We try. I wish you weren't so far away. I'd ask you to instruct in a heart beat.
We do have an impressive list of instructors, including a benchrest hall of fame shooter and others with hall of fame points. Our list of merchandise sponsors continues to grow. If I wasn't organizing this school I'd attend as a pupil or as an instructor if asked. It is easily worth the $150.00 tuition when you consider the learning curve straightening tool we use and the merchandise we will be giving away in a random draw on Friday.

I went to the school Francis put on several years ago, also in Mich.It was one of the most enjoyable learning sessions of my life. It`s hard to imagine the countless hours Francis and crew donated,to set up cirriculum, beg for prizes, prep. the range gathering equip. There I met Skip Otto, who loaned me a gun, which I later bought)Skip coached me and I shot....I learned reload, precisely, shoot, watch flags, shoot free recoil....now you talk about encouraging shooting,no one I personally know has done more than Francis Becigneul.....

Thank You Bill, those are very nice words about Francis. With your permission I would like to copy and paste this over to www.Bench-talk.com. We also are frequent there and have placed a post about the school on that website's forum.

Paul

As of today; we will have primers at the school. www.Wideners.com saw our plight and responded. Okay, I had to beg, not really. They made me a deal I couldn't refuse.

Thanks to Eric Stecker and Berger Bullets we will be testing and writing about a prototype bullet that we will be using at the school. I don't care to go beyond saying that it's a .30 caliber bullet at this time. You just may see more, later in the year, as it hits the campaign trail.

With the warming weather, I have received a number of requests for the registration form. If you intend to come to the IBS Benchrest chool, you should get your registration in soon.

I've lost track of the merchandise received for the school but I can tell you the school is the place to be that weekend for an education put across in a manner which will make you a better shooter and you will enjoy the encounter. The principles put forth and practiced in benchrest go beyond this singular discipline. What you learn in this school will serve you well in other arenas, including but not limited to, 600 yard BR, high power, and 1000 yard BR. To our advertisers, I have not really lost track of the merchandise received and I will make that list public for all to see who does support them in their time of need.

I will be there!!!! :)

A very long travel... but I am sure it will be worth the time and money.

PS - By the way, Mr. Becigneul has helped me a lot on this, with tips from hotels, ways to get there, activities for the family etc. Thank you!

Paul and I will be at the Midland, Michigan Gun Show on Saturday, April 26 promoting benchrest, benchrest school, and membership in Iosco Sportsman's Club and Bay County Gun Club. Stop in at table 122 in the Gerstager Building at the Midland County Fairgrounds and say "Hello".

It is May 6 and the registrations and merchandise prizes have been coming in at a good rate. We have room for only 5 more students. If you intend to come to the IBS Benchrest School, it would be a good idea to contact me soon. You aren't registered until I have your registration form and your check.
