I walked into a Gun store. What a terrible mistake.

I have a couple of 308's. Just turned and chambered a blank for my experimental 7 twist 308. Bedded it in a B&C target comp stock. My other Howa 308 is their heavy barrel 20" and it shoots great. Like 1-2 moa consistently at 1000 yards. Maybe not when it gets really windy though!

I have done nothing to the bolt or the actions. This action was close to perfectly true. I'd imagine I will do some things to smooth out the bolt a little as I get to playing around with things. The HACT trigger to me is very nice but I like some trigger pull.

I have the HOWA 1500 in .308. It shoots really well, consistently⅝" at 100. If I do my part or with a better shooter, probably sub ½" grouping.

The Smith & Wesson is also a Howa. Once the Japanese figure out the process to a T they run with it. I saw my first Howa at a military a R & G Club range in the 90s a guy brought one back from a USAF BX purchase. It was a nice rifle for the money. My hunting buddy had a Vanguard/ Howa in 308, it was very accurate for a production rifle.

They copied Sako so they had a decent platform to start but they are very good shooters

I’ve tried two Vanguards because I got them for really good deals. I really liked the actions, but they both shot terrible. I struggled with the second one for a while until a bought a bore scope and saw what the barrel looked like. Everyone likes to rag on Savage for their roughness, but that Vanguard had the worst barrel that I have saw. I couldn’t find a gunsmith that would rebarrel it for me because of the metric threads, so I sold it on the forum as a project rifle.

I never could understand why metric threads are a big deal. I am not a gunsmith but I run a machine/fabrication/repair shop. The Howa threads are 55 degree rounded root threads so a full form thread tool would be ideal, but I just used a relieved single point carbide thread cutter with my compound set at 55 degrees. Are these guys all running super old lathes or are they just too lazy to change out some gears?

That no good on the barrels. I wonder if they source different barrels because both my Howa barrels are pretty nice inside. Not handlapped awesomeness but pretty good.

I remember those days after I obtained my first well-paying professional job. I seem to go into my local gun shop for some 22 ammo or reloading supplies and walk out with a new gun.

My weakness was S&W revolvers - I think at one time or another, I owned just about everyone they made back in the mid to late 70 to early 80's.

After I married the best woman in the world, at least for me, I developed more discipline. ;) Out of necessity.

Who carries Howa action wrenches?
Remington 700 wrench with the bottom half flipped over works if you have one. Did a couple that way before I got around to building another half for my wrench. If you're buying one, a wrench for a flat bottom action like a Mauser/M70 should work.

I bushed a Howa today. As usual the tolerances of these were spot on but this one had one exception. The bolt face was slightly off center. I did the new firing pin hole for bolt body centerline. Lugs though were the usual perfect being exactly parallel to the face which made it easy to bush.

I bought a 1500 varmint kit rifle from a local shop in 223 many years ago, heavy barrel, laminated stick. The rifles was I believe $325, I picked up a used scope and have been shooting 1 1/8" groups at 300 yards with in in low winds forever.

What do you think of the B&C Sporter stock?
I noticed Brownell’s said you could open up the barrel channel on them to accept the heavy barrel.
Sorry soooo late on pictures. That is the sporter stock black with red spider web. My fish scale shows 6.7 pounds. Dunno if it’s right or not. It is a handy feeling little rig.

I walked into a Gun store. What a terrible mistake. "I did not even know what that junk was that they had for sale in the racks and cases".
