I walked into a Gun store. What a terrible mistake.

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
So I actually get a lot of Howa bolts in the shop to bush. They seam to have a universal problem with blanking primers, due mostly to oversized firing pin hole.

So to explain the title I walked into a store and they had a bunch of used and new Howa actions. I picked up a few and cycled them. Needless to say now I feel like I need one. Well maybe two or three haha.

Now here is my question to you. Besides bushing what kind of work do you think these should they need it? Well the probably will need something.
I will mainly use them for varmints but in the shop they will be test beds for customer bolts that come in for work.
I am figuring on getting at least a Mini in 6.5 Grendal. And a standard 1500 in some chambering. I love 6x47 but there are no options for that unless there are some places that sell just the action but I have not found any. The 6.5 G Mini will be easy since they have a barrel action option.

Picture for attention. Cause I am a visual guy.

I shot my Howa 1500 in 6.5 CM over the weekend. I hadn't shot it in a few years and I didn't even know whether it was sighted in or not? I shot a three shot group at 100 and thought damn, where did the other two bullets go? So I checked the target and if you looked close you could make out three bullet holes. Why I didn't take a pic is beyond me. Stupid I guess. But I had a ball dinging steel out to 600. Amazing rifle. And I was actually thinking of selling it! Howa 6.5 Boyds.jpg

I do have a pic of the rifle. It is a Howa barreled action that I picked up on sale at Brownells a few years back.

Ya i think brownells barreld action is the rout i will be taking. I do wish they had a 6mm cm. I would be more interested in that. If i can find an action only I’ll definitely go with another 6.5x47 or variant. I like that one way to much.

Nice looking rig. Great shooting too.

I have a Howa 1500 .223. The actions are like a bank vault locking up and need nothing. The HACT 2-stage triggers break around 3 lbs. I like a little lighter trigger. Gunbloke on Ebay sells triggers springs for the HACT. They are a nice upgrade if anything.

that was a good article in the bulletin about the Howas.i like that they are flat bottom actions. the factory trigger sounds like it may b good enough with a little tweaking so a aftermarket trigger wouldnt be necessary. i was thinking of getting a 243 b action from brownells also and rechamber it to 6br. i wondered if the shank is long enough to do it.

Would a Weatherby Vanguard .223 be essentially the same action as your Howa 1500?

Get the Mini in Grendel. I bought a barreled action and (of course) made a stock for it. It shoots really well for the $450 invested.
I love mine for fun shoots. It's been in the cupboard for a while due to the lack of 6,5 pills, but it will get some use this summer. When the barrel dies, it may end up as a 6mm ARC.

The Mini can become some what of a money pit, or at least for me. I have 4 and pretty pleased with them for the most part. I picked all but the last one up for a great price before the drew attention from many folks. The last one I got had factory wood stock, it ok but not impressed.

They could stand an upgrade from the factory as far as bottom plastic and magazines.
I have three different stocks, Boyd’s Varmint, B&C sporter and a Oryx. I myself don’t care for the oryx, sets to low in the chassis for my liking. Picture an AR flat top that is even lower, then put tall rings on it to get a decent check weld.
Bottom metal, have a first type flush magazine from Jefferson Outdoors, nice clean lines. Have metal from DIP, it’s ok and works, not pleasing to my eye though.

Good luck will keep an eye out for your findings.

What do you think of the B&C Sporter stock?
I noticed Brownell’s said you could open up the barrel channel on them to accept the heavy barrel.

I like the B&C stock. Inlet was good on mine, used the Jefferson outdoors flush bottom metal. It is a slick tidy little package imho. Has a 3x9 Leupold on it. I will weigh it and get pics when I get home.
