Last night I tried to remove a Sako AV factory barrel.

Made an aluminum bushing to fit over the Sako bases for my action wrench, rosined up the barrel and dry wall papers on action and barrel and gave the wrench handle a couple wacks with a 2 lb hammer. Notta thing budged.....wow this thing is tuffer than a Remington.

Removed the whole setup from the barrel vice and peered in the action bolt hole in the lug looking for signs of an epoxy......nuttin in there but rust on the threads. Ok try some Kroil.......squirted some around the breech and filled the action bolt hole with it. After an hour or two the Kroil in the bolt hole was still plum full.....no migration.......so let it sit overnight.

Next day.....bolt hole still about half full....wow I was surprised it hadn't all creeped in. Oh well give it a try.

Set up everything in the vice again all rosined up. Gave er a wack.....nuttin. Oh boy gonna have to try and heat er up a little. Oh well give er one more wack first..........SUCCESS.......spun free..

Love it when a plan comes together.

You did well. I usually wont even touch them for a week putting kroil in it every day. I have a tikka ive beat on every day for over a month. My lead hammer has never failed me until now. I could get it off in a few minutes with a parting cut but i just want to see how long it takes to remove with a wrench

Thanks Dusty.

This was particularly troublesome since a parting cut was not an option..... it's going to be a switch barrel...... .350 Whelen to go with the factory 30-06 barrel on this one.

Factory 30-06 barrel has less than 20 rounds on it and has not been fired in twenty years......whole rifle is near NIB.

You will need to check the headspace if you are not torquing the barrel back to the point it was at from the factory. It is possibly excessive.

Had my first T3 a couple of years ago.
The barrel breech had little or no cylinder, just steep taper.
Custom bored a bushing for it, but no amount of rosin would make it grab with all the torque needed. Worse than a century old rusty milsurp.

Chad Dixon passed along a tip that worked like a charm.
Grabbed some lightly broken-down aluminum oxide media out of the blast cabinet vac, mixed it with light oil to make a slurry and spread it on. Give it a try next stubborn barrel..
