I seen the Savage 110 BA STEALTH TODAY... WOW....

I seen the Savage 110 BA Stealth 6.5 CREEDMOOR Rifle today at Scheels in Iowa City IOWA. $1099.00. It was only the 20 inch barrel. i would want the 24 inch barrel. I thought it was A GREAT LOOKING GUN. All metal forearm. free floated , big gaps between the barrel and forearm which I really like. I could see buying this gun over the Ruger. I hope we can get a review on the guns. martyd

I want one.

Have one on order from Gunbroker. Got it for $959.00 plus shipping. Couple folks have gotten theirs and they seem very pleased. The one I ordered shows a 6.5 in a 24" barrel, the .308 is listed with a 20". Hope to have Monday for a trip to Talladaga for 200, 300, 600 test. Will post impressions.

Thanks

Gavriel Moreno-Bryars - Picked up my BA Stealth yesterday, cleaned and lubed, ran ammo through chamber, a few fed issues, these smoothed as action worked more. Issue on 10 round clip as stated, fit to tight with 10 rounds. Ruger PR and my Magpul 20 round clips for DPMS 308 do not appear to fit. MDT has reasonable priced clips, but with 10 round issue I will probably try Magpul AICS compatible.

Off to range today to sight in, then hopefully 600 yd at Talladaga Wednesday. Will post about results.

So some more impressions. From the barrel to the castle nut, the rifle is very nice. The Chassis is 1 piece, where as the RPR is 2 pieces, not sure that really matters much. Weight is about 2 pounds less than RPR. Trigger is nice, accu-triggers seem to have a good following of those who like them.

The stock is an Israeli made FAB G-Shock. Trying to like it, but it probably will be replaced by a Luth-AR or Magpul. Need a approx 45 buck adapter + buffer tube to swap out. It is stable, and as some have reported, very stiff to adjust. Biggest issue is you have the same 6 position as an AR carbine. Also cheek piece is a little short for eye relief. Using a Larue so 1.5" high. If I was not so wedded to my scope sharing on 3 rifles, I'd go with lower rings to get closer to the bore.

Mounted a m-lok 5" rail with swivel adapter. The Stealth has a swivel that can be removed and the existing hole works as front mount hole. Can confirm monolithic comment from above - no seams.

Shot 40 rounds at 100. Did not bother with pictures, will take some tomorrow at the 200 & 600 scoring computer screen. The RSO is a friend, he shot rifle using 140 ELD-match, had a nice clover leaf. Tried my std load for RPR turned down 2 gr h4350 to start. Was not impressed. Factory showed potential at approx 1 moa (3 1/2 MOA then 2 widening out). Berger 130's did extremely well for a starting point 40.5 gr. H4350. Set at 2.16 to Olgive. Rifle appears to have 2.24 measured at Olgive before hitting lands (did I get the terminology right). Sub-MOA. Will take start shooting 41, 41.5, etc to find sweet spot. Then work on seating length. Son usually shoots 300 Win Mag. He shot the rifle and was sub-MOA.

Remembering it took over 100 rounds to get RPR to .4-.5 MOA I will reserve final judgement until after 100+ rounds.

Price point on Gun Broker shows them selling between 950 - 1000. So if you can't get a hold of an RPR or need a less expensive option, the Stealth is showing some promise.

Thanks

Update -
Went to Talladaga, focused on 200 yd. Will try and post pictures tomorrow. Shot 140 on 14 shots - total shot 50 rounds Savage Stealth and about 30 300 Win Mag. Wife shot 50 through her RPR - she did well also with here last 10 shot scoring 100. Need to check pictures to count x's. Wind was 10 mph and shifting. Need work on my wind calling ability.

Had a scope issue on 300 win mag so it used up more time than planned. Son shooting his 300 Win Mag really improved, shooting in the high 90's.

So the update - the rifle is solid, the factory 140 ELD-match did well. The star of the day was the Berger 130 OTM's. Will work up some loads to shoot 100 yards on Monday (have jury duty so hoping not to get called). Have 300 ELD-match to reload, will see how they do. Between the 2 I have little doubt of a solid sub-MOA load.

The stock is a disappointment. Ordered the adapter for fixed length, it hopefully will arrive next week. Will try the PRS Magpul and the Luth-AR. Why disappointing: I have a Bushnell 4.5 - 30 xrs (i believe, scope is downstairs). Using a Larue QD mount. At max rise on cheek rest I was about 1/4" low for good alignment. Cheek rest moves with length, so not only does it not go high enough, it's short length pushes me to the very front of the rest. It may work for others with different scope mounts but for me, a no go.

The other negative - scope rail is not a 20 MOA. All my bolt rifles have 20 moa. Not a big issue but will swap-out as soon as I can find the proper replacement. Savage was not listing rifle last I checked, so information is mainly from a few people on different forums. Rail is an EGW so I will email them.

At 400 below RPR you get a good chassis, barrel and action. Figure you have to invest another 250-300 on rail and stock with adapter. Still a little cheaper than RPR but not much. Also RPR 18008 now has a break, so that makes it almost break even.

My wife shot Savage, did not like recoil. Our range officer in Talladaga was John (super guy, helped with my scope malfunction and showed my lots of new items + plus had his 2 customs out shooting along with us). He shot the Savage and liked it.

Is it a RPR killer - no way. Is it a good rifle - yes, so far. Jury will be out until lots of people are shooting it and we determine how well it does long term and see how Savage stands behind it. We know Ruger is standing behind the RPR.

The RPR had lots of issues in .308 and less so the .243, only time will tell if the Savage line fairs any better or not. The introduction of 300 Win Mag and 338 Lapua will make the Savage a force in the future (if RPR comes out long action as predicted, that will be exciting).

Bottom line - in my family we have both, and like both. Like everything else it comes down to personal preferences - beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Thanks Cameron - I hope this helps someone in their search.

PS - RSO let me try his AICS mag's worked perfectly.

Stealth with New Stock - Luth-AR

Ammo - Seems to like Factory 140 ELD-Match Hornady - 2710 FPS. Also 140 ELD-Match and Berger 130 seem to be doing well in reload. Right now seatinig 2.186 on ELD-Match with 41 gr H4350. Further testing Monday. May work up my last 20 Berger 130's also.

Good choice on the Luth-ar.

MDT magazine well is a bit weird. I could not get the Magpul aics mag in my mdt chassis until I filed the lips back a little. If you get one you'll see where they're interfering once you try to shove it in the magwell. The lips will be marked at the front showing you how far back to trim them.

Is this the Mag you used -
Magpul PMAG AC Magazine AICS Short Action 308 Winchester Polymer Black?

I tried my wife's Magpul that came with her Ruger - It did not fit, want to make sure I pick the right one to order. Looking at Accurate Mag also, any thoughts?

Thanks Cameron

Loaded 20 rounds of Berger 130 OTM tonight. Probably best I have loaded as variance in CBTO (I think I said that right) is within .0015 of batch. Bergers did well in previous test at 40.5 gr H4350 set at 2.185 CBTO, just fit in the magazine. If the Berger wants longer will have to wait until I get AICS type magazine.

Tomorrow should be fun with both Horn 140 ELD-Match and Bergers to test.

Load results - Berger 130, Hornady 140 ELD-Match, Hornady 143 ELD-X

Range trip to my local club 100yd indoor range was a learning experience. Right off the bat had 2 issues to deal with:

  1. My Atlas Bi-pod was allowing a good bit of lateral play at the Picatinny rail. Had to disassemble and reassemble to correct.
  2. As I mentioned before on our range we can't shoot prone. The bench has flex based on amount of weight you place on it. This is effecting repeat-ability. Going to try adding a dowel rod to stiffen up.
Test results (pictures hopefully to follow tomorrow)

  1. Fouled barrel with 139 Lapua @ 40.5 H4350.
  2. Began firing 5 shot ELD-X at 40.5 - 4 shot group .565 MOA 5th shot flyer
  3. ELD-M 5 shot groups based on 40.5 H4350in .2 increments CBTO 2.18 min 2.183 - 2.1855 delta .0025
    A. 40.5 4 shot .90 MOA 5th shot a pull.
    B. 40.7 2 shots tight, 3 all over the map - 1.09 MOA
    C. 40.9 (after fixing bi-pod), up and down very tight, some horizontal dispersion .775 MOA
    D. 41.1 .89 MOA
  4. Berger 130 OTM H4350, CBTO 2.18 min 2.184 - 2.1855 delta .0015
    A. 40.5 H4350 .896 MOA
    B. 41 H4350 4 shot .833, 5 shot .986 pull
    C. 41.5 H4350 3 shot .435, 4 shot .572, 5 shot .877 pull
    D. 42 H4350 3 shot .468, 4 shot .90, 5 shot 1.114 pull
Based on what I'm seeing, the rifle is far more capable than I am. With Bi-pod fixed, it got better, but flex in board was really messing with my mind.

Going to redo this test focusing on better groups above 41.5 and 42 with Berger trying 2 changes - a wooden dowel wedged between floor and bench and a lead sled. Goal is to try and take me out of the equation and let the rifle and load speak.

Impressions after 160 rounds.

The rifle is considerably lighter than RPR, that can be good or bad depending on what you want to do with it - Primary mission if you will.

Fixed stock is a win for me.

Rifle is well constructed, fit and finish are good.

Instructions and web site support from Savage have a way to go. No magazines listed (last I checked), no stock replacement instructions, adapter not on web-site, etc. It took over 2 weeks to even get listed on web-site.

Magazines - MDT holds 8 rounds, feed is ok, AICS I tried worked much better. MDT max length approx 2.8

Have a Magpul AICS 10 round coming tomorrow, I believe it allows 2.86. Will post how it does in this rifle.

For those thinking of replacing with a fixed stock - Highly recommended in my opinion - I tried it first without the MTD fixed stock adapter. It worked with the Luth-AR but was not a smooth transition and back of hand could force up against the 90 degree angle behind thumb.

Went back after getting adapter in and redid stock. At 49 bucks plus shipping it is expensive, but looks so much better, I'll try to get a picture before the 4th of July.

Caution - the buffer tube for fixed is an A2 type. Be real careful, it is easy to mess up the tube. Look under the back near where the buffer tube meets the rifle. There is a set screw. Manual does not show the Stealth only BA so this is yet to be proved, but I think you want to loosen the set screw before trying to remove the buffer tube. The buffer is on tight (much tighter than AR's I have worked on), so if you loosen set screw and the buffer comes off fairly easily (like an AR) that should confirm what I am seeing. Wish the manual mentioned that.
