I started a new house a few weeks ago. It is not an average house, it is 39'5" from the basement slab to the plywood on the roof. My forklift reaches 42' but cannot set anything on the flat roof. There are numerous steel beams in the first floor, and the second floor, and columns that go from the bottom to the top. 6000 sq ft of living space is all it is, so not that big, but it has an elevator.
I get to the job a few minutes before 7:00, but it is still dark. I have to use a light to find the key to my job boxes. I push lunch to 12:30 or 1:00. When the afternoon sun is nearly to the ridge line, and the temperature drops like a rock, I know its time to go. But, I just want to get one more little part finished. My back hurts, my hands sore, and I am sunburned, but I love it. 3 weeks in, I've got the second floor built, steel for the roof is being set on November 5th. I am hoping to have the roof sheathed by Thanksgiving, December 1 at the latest before the real snow starts.
I wake up with my back stiff, and it takes the hour drive to the job to loosen up a bit, then another hour to get fully up to speed. The snow and heavy clothes slow the process to full productivity. But, once I get going, I am on a roll. I put down an entire unit of 3/4 ply myself yesterday, along with all the layout and keeping the guys going. I used to be able to do a unit of ply and then go home and work in the woods, now its just the ply, and then a couple beers after the drive home.
I pride myself on being able to produce one of these with very minimal tolerances. And, getting it done in a short period of time. I am sore, my back hurts, my hands are beat up.
But, it feels good.
