I just Bought A Project……Opinions

Al, there are several shops right here in the Houston area that do all sorts of finishes, including hot tank blueing.

I got the barrel chambered and installed this evening. My 55 degree insert did not come in, so I ground a tool on a piece of MoMax High Speed Steel. Worked just fine.

I headspaced on the action face, but set the clearance on the inner ring at just .001. I figure by the time in compresses the action face it will just graze the inner ring.

I cut the barrel and crowned it at 25 inches. I left it a little on it because I might decided to machine a 1 “ long integral muzzle break.I have never done.

Your barrel will most definitely hit the c-ring. I generally cut mine at .002 clearance and they always contact hard, but I torque the barrel on darn tight on a Mauser.
I have done some integral brakes. I bore the barrel out to 3/8 inch to the depth of the brake (usually about an inch and a half). Of course, that 3/8 diameter depends on the caliber. If it's a 338, the ID is going to be more like 7/16 Then I bore the first 3/8 inch and thread it to 7/16 x 24 tpi. I cut the gills with a 1/8 end mill and they are biased toward the top. I then make a restrictor which threads into the muzzle and is reamed to .015 over bullet diameter. I slot this for a flat blade screwdriver. If you want to deactivate the brake, make a sleeve which goes into the brake and blocks off the gills. You can just make an insert which is held in place by the restrictor, or you can make an insert which is threaded at the front to 7/16x24. I like this better. The finished brake looks a lot like those found on the old BSA featherweight rifles. WH

Without reading through everything my choice would be a blued barrel in 30-06 or 7X57.
Is the stock in the first picture the one you chose ? I really like the wood.

The barrel is chrome moly, it will be blued. I have already done the 8.5 -1 twist Bartlien Barrel In SAAMI spec 280 Remington.

Take a minute and go through the thread. I have pictures and descriptions of everything I have done,

Several times I have had to spot heat the area to be drilled on Mauser actions due to hardness, this always worked well as long as the rest of the receiver was wrapped in wet cloth to stay cool. Funny thing is no two ever seem to be the same, some are soft as butter and some are hard as diamond, depends on the make, year, etc... I did two Spanish Mauser scope mounts recently, one was super hard and the other was soft, go figure?

Note: If you ever do break a Carbide tap in a hole you can BLOW it out with a plasma cutter, been there, done that.
Ditto...A real pain

No need for a brake on a .280. It should be a 'pussycat' with 150-160g bullets. It'd just be cool factor. Now, if you're launching 275g+ bullets at velocity, a brake can be a plus.

I got the barrel channel inletted and free floating. The original Browning barrel IMG_2409.jpegIMG_2410.jpeghad a hump in the middle so there is a gap in that part of the forearm, no way to avoid that, but the barreled action is ready to glass bed into the stock.

I ordered a Timney trigger for it this morning. I need to find some nice slim profile 30mm scope rings.

Do you plan to polish the bolt, extractor and safety assembly? Maybe jewel the bolt............or extractor,
maybe too flashy?

Yes.

A Business associate, Bauman Propellor Service, has all sorts of big polishing wheels. He said I could use them at my leisure.

Take a look at the Burris 'Zee' rings... a classic look and are available in a gloss blued finish. -Al

Was a little surprised to hear you don't hunt...no matter. Can I assume you have taken your projects to the range to sight them in? ( :

I simply do not have the time to hunt. It’s a heck of a lot of work.
I have built several nice hunting rigs for friends. I help members of my Gun Club when the need arises.

I have informed one of my good friends that when I get this Mauser project done, I want him to take it down to Mexico and tag a big mule deer.
